Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is the result of a cascade of in ammatory responses stimulated by a physical element that is the force generated by orthodontic appliances. Considering that there are individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment while also using isotretinoin, and that there is limited information on the effects of this combination in the literature, we are proposing this study to evaluate the in uence of isotretinoin on OTM. Materials and Methods Thirty-ve animals were used, and they were randomly divided into 7 groups, containing 5 animals in each group. Group 1: Control; Group 2: OTM for 7 days; Group 3: OTM for 14 days; Group 4: Treated with isotretinoin for 14 days; Group 5: Treated with isotretinoin for 21 days; Group 6: Treated with isotretinoin for 14 days and undergoing OTM for 7 days; Group 7: Treated with isotretinoin for 21 days and undergoing OTM for 14 days. In Groups 6 and 7, the animals were treated with isotretinoin at a dosage of 1.0mg/kg/day for 7 days before OTM and maintained during the movement period in the respective groups. Results There was no signi cant difference on microtomographic parameters [Trabecular Volume (BV/TV), Trabecular Thickness (Tb.Th), Number of Trabeculae (Tb.N) and Trabecular Separation (Tb.Sp)] and tooth displacement between groups. Conclusion Isotretinoin did not cause a reduction in tooth displacement during OTM when administered at a dose of 1.0mg/kg/day and isotretinoin did not change the microtomographic parameters of animals treated with isotretinoin + OTM.

Research paper thumbnail of Delayed tooth replantation in rats: effect of systemic antibiotic therapy with amoxicillin and tetracycline

As there are no reports in the literature about its influence on tooth replantation, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of systemic administration of antibiotics (amoxicillin and tetracycline) at the different phases of the repair process (7, 15, 30 days) in delayed rat tooth replantation. Ninety Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) had their maxillary right incisors extracted and bench-dried for 60 min. The dental papilla, enamel organ, pulp tissue, and root surface-adhered periodontal ligament were removed, and the teeth were replanted. The animals received no antibiotics (n = 30) or were medicated systemically with amoxicillin (n = 30) and tetracycline (n = 30), and were euthanized after 7, 15, and 30 days. Regardless of the evaluation period, the acute inflammatory infiltrate was less intense and root resorption presented smaller extent and depth in the group treated with amoxicillin. The results suggest that SAT has a positive influence on the repair process in delayed tooth replantation and that amoxicillin is an excellent treatment option.

Ninety rats had their incisors extracted and stored in saline for 5 min. Next, the teeth were replanted, and the animals were assigned to three groups according to the antibiotic administered by oral gavage: control group, amoxycillin group, and tetracycline group. Euthanasia was performed at 7, 15, and 30 days after replantation. Regardless of the evaluation period, the connective tissue underlying the epithelial attachment and the periodontal ligament showed statistically significant difference relative to the acute inflammatory infiltrate, which was more intense in the control group followed by the tetracycline group. These results point to the fact that systemic antibiotic therapy (SAT) in immediate tooth replantation is beneficial to pulpal and periodontal ligament repair and that amoxycillin is an excellent option. There is a lack of randomized studies assessing how the use of systemic antibiotics could influence tooth healing after immediate replantation.

Antihypertensive drugs such as losartan not only control blood pressure but also enhance bone healing. In addition, alendronate sodium is widely used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. Hence, we evaluated the effect of systemic antihypertensive and local alendronate coted on implants on osseointegration under hypertensive and estrogen-deficiency conditions. A total of 64 spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) treated with losartan were randomly divided according to the estrogen-deficiency induction by ovariectomy (OVX) or not (SHAM), and whether the implant surface was coated with sodium alendronate (ALE) or not, resulting in four groups: SHR SHAM, SHR SHAM ALE, SHR OVX, and SHR OVX ALE. The removal torque, microcomputed tomography, and epifluorescence microscopy were the adopted analyses. The hypertensive and estrogen-deficiency animals presented a lower removal t...

Saliva is a body fluid that can be used to investigate alterations in the oxidative system with several specific advantages over blood. Nebivolol is a third-generation selective β1-adrenergic receptor antagonist that promotes vasodilation and has been shown to reduce oxidative stress in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The use of Nebivolol in different periods of treatment demonstrated that it is an efficient anti-hypertensive drug. We evaluated the oxidative stress biomarkers and the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems in saliva of hypertensive patients before and after the use of anti-hypertensive therapeutic doses of Nebivolol, since saliva can be used as an auxiliary tool to analyze parameters of oxidative stress.

This condition may result in neurological disorders, phonation and chewing dysfunction, dysphagia and risk of malnutrition. This alteration contributes to oral hygiene impairment, and continuous uses of the antipsychotic and anticonvulsant medication. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if microcephaly modified redox balance in saliva. Our hypothesis is that in the microcephalic patient's salivary oxidative stress is lower because of the increase in antioxidant defenses. The study included 13 patients with microcephaly (microcephalic group – MC) and 12 patients without neurological disorders (normocephalic group – NC), from zero to ten years old, no edentulous. Saliva was collected using a cotton wool swab, placing it on the child's mouth floor. After centrifugat...

Periodontal disease may enhance serum cytokine levels. Cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) have been associated with reduced glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) expression, decreased protein kinase B (Akt) phosphorylation, and insulin resistance.
