Cross-linguistically these features are not frequent and inheritance from Proto-Indo-European cannot be claimed. A close look into the syntax and semantics of (Peripheral) Akkadian and into Sumerian reveals that they may be innovations due to language contact between Hittite and Semitic languages. This fact deserves appropriate consideration in the reconstruction of Proto-Anatolian and Proto-Indo-European.

Apart from work related to the reduced number of verbal moods, there exist some investi¬gations of the origin and function of the particle (-)man, which combined with a verb in the indicative served the Hittites as a functional counterpart for the lacking inflectional subjunctive and optative. Moreover, modal functions of lin¬guistic expressions are oc¬casionally mentioned in the major reference works and in studies dealing with specific syntactic constructions, but an exhaustive description of the Hittite modal system remains to be made. As a first step towards this goal, the paper presents a list of Hittite modal expressions and identifies the kinds of modal meaning they indicate. Although far from complete, the list shows that Hittite had a sophisticated modal system with a body of modal expressions that were capable of conveying all kinds of modal meaning known to us from contem¬porary semantics. The fact that modality nonetheless often remains unexpressed in Hittite texts may therefore be seen not as a deficiency of the Hittite language but rather as a peculiarity of Hittite narrative procedures.

Pogosto se uporablja, posebno v anglosaksonski psihiatriji, kot izraz za preprost opis in naštevanje psihopatoloških pojavov. Najizrazitejša značilnost in hkrati težava takšne fenomenologije je, da vzame psihopatološke pojave kot samoumevne, dobro definirane in od konteksta neodvisne »objekte«. Pripiše jim realnost in statičnost, podobno predmetom v svetu, kot so miza ali jabolko. Človekovo psihično »življenje« tako atomizira in popredmeti.

that are marked with special characters called gloss-wedges. Based on the observation that
many of these words have meanings that had been tabooed since the period of the Proto-
Indo-European language onwards, while others were closely related to the Hittite ideology of
that period, it may be safely assumed that the sudden introduction of gloss-wedges in Hittite
texts was but a part of a wider ideological reform that also included the language. The fact that many words furnished with gloss-wedges refer to unacceptable behavior, which in the
context of the marked words was often explicitly prohibited, strongly supports this assumption.

It was performed by a linguist in conjunction with two psychotherapists that both treat the same suicidal patient. They do not work as cotherapists, but as completely independent professionals, one employing systemic family therapy to address interpersonal issues regarding the patient's relations to his relatives and friends, and the other using logotherapy and existential analysis to address the basic existential questions of death, freedom, and loneliness. Each of them tape-recorded thirty minutes of conversation with the patient. The tapes were then analyzed by the linguist with regard to implicitly conveyed information about the patient's feelings and attitudes toward the suicidal act, his self-image, his relations toward his family, and his attitude toward each of the psychotherapists. The experiment confirmed that discourse analysis can provide significant conclusions about the emotions, beliefs, and attitudes of the speaker and may thus be informative to psychotherapists in their therapeutic work.

Previous discussions have provided no common consensus on these issues. The widespread motifs of giving birth to a large number of children at the same time 3 , exposing a child in the wilderness or in a river 4 , and incest 5 make it difficult to determine whether the text is of genuine Hittite origin 6 or adapted from some other source 7 . With regard to the theme, several different proposals can be found in the literature as well. It has been assumed that the text may narrate the history of a town named Zalpa 8 , the imposition of the right to the throne 9 , the colonization of the Black Sea region 10 , or the struggle for power among two or three cities -that is, between Kaneš and Zalpa, Ðattuša and Zalpa, or perhaps Zalpa, Neša, and Ðattuša 11 . It suggests that both strategies convey information about social identity and the psychological state of the speaker and serve to define the situation and indicate his attitude to other participants and to the topic of the discourse.

The relationships between expressions and their referents, as well as those between the expressions themselves differ depending on the register. The system of the Slovene standard language is rich in registers. Thus it is difficult to speak of »total synonyms«. Even in the cases where two expressions in a certain register are invariants content-wise, »total synonymy« is hindered by the norms pertaining to a particular type of discourse.

Her role was to consult the cosmic constellations just as scholars from her House of Wisdom, i. e. the scribal school, were to consult the clay tablets written with star-shaped signs. A starry sky indeed does resemble a cuneiform tablet and some scribes in Mesopotamia were skilled in foretelling the future, therefore the name 'Heavenly Writing' for cuneiform is not without some justification.

It is based on the dissertation of the author 1 which aimed to develop a method for analyzing actual relationships between synonymical expressions in a text corpus, propose a way of exploring their functions in texts, and contribute to our understanding of implicitly conveyed information in texts.
