On seven folios (117a-124a), there is a retold content of five biblical books (Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, the Book of Judges, Ruth), which also form part of the Octateuch, a set of eight Old Testament books, known also in an Old Slavic translation from Greek. By analyzing the form of proper names that occur in this retold text, we will try to answer the question of whether the Church Slavonic text, which also bears signs of the influence of the vernacular language, was compiled on the basis of the Latin original, which we can expect for compiling the breviary, or on the basis of the Greek, which is common as a language of original texts translated into the Old Church Slavonic in the area of Slavia Orthodoxa.

Vernacular Elements in the Text of the Book of Genesis in the Croatian Church Slavonic Breviaries... more Vernacular Elements in the Text of the Book of Genesis in the Croatian Church Slavonic Breviaries On selected parts of the text of the Book of Genesis in Croatian Glagolitic breviaries of the 14 th and 15 th centuries, we will try to show that the language of these texts is not uniform, that it cannot be characterized as Church Slavonic language in all cases, and that even in the language of the biblical text we can find various elements of the vernacular language, i.e. Old Croatian. That's why the language of the biblical texts in the Croatian Glagolitic breviaries can be used in some segments for the research of Old Croatian, although the professional literature mostly claims the opposite, referring to the fact that the language of the biblical text is only conservative Old Church Slavonic.

In the Old Slavonic translations of Psalter, Gospels, Apostle, etc. we find several equivalents, the most common of which are въ + acc./loc., на + acc./loc. It turns out that in the psalter maintains a similar state of equivalence as in the Gospels, while in the apostle, the Suprasl codex and the paroimarion the usage differs. Prepositional phrase въ + loc. for the Greek εἰς it is few in number in the psalter. For translations of the adverbial of time expressed by the phrase with ἐν, the equivalents using въ + acc. in the psalter predominate въ + loc. in a ratio of 8:1. The occurrence of the preposition до + gen. is specific for the psalter (19x) for εἰς in the phrase до коньца (for εἰς τέλος) versus въ коньць (for εἰς τὸ τέλος). The third most common translation of ἐν + noun in the psalter is the non-prepositional instrumental on the syntactic position of the object and the fourth by frequency translation is the phrase о + loc. only combined with the nouns of the means of »higher power« (богъ, господь, спасение, грѣхъ), while in the apostle and paroimarion is also used in connection with other nouns.

In the early Middle Ages, a Benedictine breviary was in use in Europe and consisted of two main parts: the Proper of Season and the Proper and Common of Saints. Additionally, it may also contain the biblical book of the Psalter and special offices. Since the 12th century, the breviary spread to other orders and resulted in the creation of multiple variants. In addition, the volume of some of the content increased too much. One of the efforts of the Council of Trent (ending in 1533) was therefore the unification of the breviary, which also led to changes in the range of readings. With respect to patristic content, this mainly affected the texts marked as homilies of Origen, which are no longer included in the post-Tridentine breviary.

According to the material of the Old Church Slavonic dictionary (Prague 1956-97), the equivalents of this Greek preposition are mostly въ + akuz./loc., на + akuz./loc., less often къ, до, о, отъ, оу, in certain cases even nouns without preposition, adjectives, pronouns or adverbs.

We also draw attention to two fragments of the Gospel according to Matthew, in which it is possible to trace the interaction of Old Czech and, more generally, West Slavic language influences and the Church-Slavonic text of the Gospel. The influence of the Church-Slavonic text is evident in the oldest monuments of the so-called 1 st redaction of the Old Bohemian translation of the Bible from the 14th century and, on the other hand, the West Slavonic language influences are observed on the fragment of the Church-Slavonic Gospel, probably from the 14th century. These facts seem to indicate a much greater mutual bi-directional influence of biblical texts in West Slavonic vernacular languages and the Church-Slavonic translation of the Gospel than previously thought.
