Environment legislation and the establishment of the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency now date back more than a decade. In 1988 it was also one of the first developing countries to begin designing a comprehensive national conservation strategy. Proposed investments and adjustments to policy arising from the strategy are incorporated in the Eighth Plan 1993-98; and continue to be debated in national fora [see Amir, Chaudhri and Nasir (1992) for example]. Such actions reflect the growing concerns on the wide range of environmental problems facing Pakistan, the result of a still rapidly growing population (more than 3 percent per annum) confronting widespread natural resource degradation. The main purpose of this paper, therefore, is not to underline the well known need to take account of the environment in agricultural planning and policy-making in Pakistan, but to...

Considerable progress has been made over the past thirty years in reducing the numbers of the hungry, and projections over the next thirty years suggest that this progress will continue. The majority of developing countries have participated in this progress and have improved nutrition but there are significant regional differences. The current challenge is to build upon and accelerate the progress already made. Everyone is involved in this struggle against hunger and malnutrition, and to achieve these goals, global partnerships to enhance co-operation and co-ordination are being strengthened. Successful country experiences for improving food security and nutrition have demonstrated the importance of peace, political stability, and stable economic growth. There is also the need for increased foreign investment and increased ODA, particularly for African agriculture, debt relief, the better in...

I can only wholeheartedly congratulate the Foundation for having awarded this year’s prize to such an outstanding scholar and fine person, my friend, Per Pinstrup-Andersen. The topic that he assigned to me, “Trends in Reducing Global Hunger,” and, I would add, challenges to agricultural development, cannot be more appropriate at this time. As you’ve already said, unfortunately, the World Food Summit five years later, it was the name for the summit planned for early November this year, had to be postponed for the reasons that are well known to all of us – the international situation did not appear appropriate for such an event at this time. And we hope that the summit will be held next year.

The process by which household food consumption and nutritional status are affected by commercialization is described with emphasis on identifying the major elements and how each element is influenced by the change. The issue was whether agricultural production systems and efficient use of resources can be sustained under population pressure. The study area was the commune of Giciye in Gisenyi district in northwestern Rwanda. The area is mountainous and has very poor quality and acidic soils with a deficiency of phosphorus. Population increase averaged 4.2%/year. There is a high prevalence of underconsumption and malnutrition. Subsistence food production is becoming increasingly more difficult. New activities include production of tea and expansion of potato p...
