Research paper thumbnail of The Galliae and Claudius: examples of models and diffusion

The PhD work has different aims. First of all it appraises the urban works during Claudius´ reign focusing the research in Iberian peninsula, Galliae and Africa Proconsularis with a comparison in Britannia, Noricum and Mauretaniae, formerly only from Claudius onwards part of the Empire, in order to evaluate the different approaches in „old“ and „new“ provinces. The work involves, then, a reflection on planning issues and on the strategies adopted by Claudius as well a comprehensive examination of new buildings or repaired ones and the underlying intentions when we compare them with the prototypes in Italy; in the end it intends to find some constant trends, already pointed out by Venturi for Italy, in the urban field notwithstanding the different cultural, geographical and historical situations.
In the research, thought the provincials tried to emulate and copy the architectural models of Rome, we have found very interesting how the various cultural and historical circumstances affected the interpretation of the models creating original and new version of public spaces and buildings. For every province taken into account, also for the new subdued ones, the differences, in this sense, are impressive and they convey the peculiarities of the regions. But it seems that not only the singular situation of the provinces played an important role here, indeed Claudius and the governors, who were specifically chosen for their competences and having the power to authorize major constructions on behalf of the emperor, participated in this process in a specific way.
In this paper I focus the attention on the gallic provinces. I present and discuss the situation for every single provinces attempting, first, to stress the distinctive characters of models and diffusion connected to the cultural singularities (although we tend to uniform the populations living in this big territory, there are different kinds of cultural units) and, secondly, to highlight, if possible, some common traits for all Galliae in order to show, also for this regional example, the aims of Claudius.

These results are, then,
going to compare with the policy and approaches assumed by Claudius in new acquired territories of Britannia, Noricum and
Maureataniae.
Research on urbanization in Africa Proconsularis, as also in the other provinces, encompasses various stages. First, we must
understand the situation before the coming of the Romans: for the previous situation is thought to have affected, in part, the urbanchoices of the emperor. Second, we must study the role played by governors specifically chosen for their competences, and havingthe power to authorize major constructions on behalf of the emperor and also in Africa patroni of the cities played an important role inthis field. Third and more central is the research on Claudius’ work, which comprehends his engagement and the urban activities inorder to sum up the trends.
Here the focus is on Africa Proconsularis ´situation. Differences in the setting of buildings or complexes in the cities, as well as in theplanning, the decoration and patterns of the buildings highlight the peculiarity of Claudius’ works, when compared to the
reorganization implemented by previous emperors, and to what happens in the other provinces; I shall attempt to explain the reasonsfor these singularities.
