First, the concept is explored theoretically, making use of an interdisciplinary approach. The links between historical narration (historisches Erzählen), legitimacy and identity are established on the basis of the philosophy of history by Jörn Rüsen, complemented with sociological theories. The official name of the state, the coat of arms, “history laws”, architecture and stenographic protocols of plenary sessions are analysed as media of history politics via which historical narratives are communicated and negotiated. It shows that these narratives affected the construction of group identities, the orientation and legitimisation of decisions, thus influencing the process of democratisation decisively. The narrative of returning to one’s own, national traditions of democracy in the inter-war period was established as the dominant narrative superseding alternative narratives, due to, firstly, the necessities of the democratisation process, secondly, the history of history politics and thirdly, as the content analysis of the stenographic protocols shows also quantitatively, the power relations between parties represented in the parliament.
