In two case studies we present various sensors, acquisition configurations and platforms for image acquisition and describe the image processing workflow. Additionally, actual and future developments and trends such as further automation of image processing and the combination of image-based techniques with data acquired by other sensors will be discussed. In this paper, we focus on those image-based techniques that aim for 3D reconstruction of objects and terrain from multi-image processing, though for several applications other image-based techniques can be an option as well, e.g. the generation of facade plans from single images or structured light systems for small objects and accuracies in the range of less than 100 μm.

The first written reference on the geometrical concepts dates back to a treatise by the famous Islamic mathematician and astronomer al-Kashi (died 1429). The relation between layout and spatial arrangement is the topic of this video. First, historical sites of muqarnas around the Mediterranian Sea and in Middle Asia are shown. Then follows an introduction to the basic concepts of muqarnas construction with the help of computer graphics. The various elements are visualized and the connection between erected vaults and their 2D projections is explained. The focus point of reconstructing muqarnas lies in Iran. Turning to a still existing niche of the Friday Mosque at Natanz, the film continues with a reconstruction of a vault corresponding to the oldest known muqarnas design, found at Takht-i Suleyman. Finally, animations of illuminated muqarnas at Bastam reveal the fine art of both architecture and computer...

Research paper thumbnail of Simulating vehicle systems with discontinuous effects using MBSSIM

The present paper gives a short survey over the variety of discontinuities usually encountered in vehicle models, their error controlled treatment with integrator libraries with root finding option e.g. MBSSIM (see [3]) and the benefits both in accuracy and computation time that result from such a treatment. The paper is organized in three sections. First some basic facts about multibody systems and the integrator library MBSSIM are given. After this a benchmark model from the field of vehicle dynamics is presented with a short discussion of the typical discontinuities encountered in such models. Numerical results comparing the root finding approach with conventionally implemented models conclude this paper.

It is further complicated by the fact that many teams are formed with just a few weeks time to go between the first training session and the actual competition. We describe parts of a training course designed for exactly this situation to teach three prime objectives for a successful participation as a newcomer team at the FLL: defining realistic goals, building strong and versatile teams and introducing a few important robotics principles by sample experience. In two examples from the actual training set we concentrate on these principles and how the design of the exercise as well as the role of the teacher/moderator can influence the learning curve concerning these objectives.

Recent decades have seen a major shift both in attitudes and deployment of computers, which are now vital and highly effective tools in disciplines where they were once viewed as elaborate typewriters. This revealing volume details the vast array of computing applications that researchers in the humanities now have recourse to, including the dissemination of scholarly information through virtual co-laboratories, data retrieval, and the modeling of complex processes that contribute to our natural and cultural heritage. One key area covered in this book is the versatility of computers in presenting images and graphics, which is transforming the analysis of data sets and archaeological reconstructions alike. The papers published here are grouped into three broad categories that cover mathematical and com...

An important tool in this respect are integrators that are able to cope with the almost universal presence of discontinuous effects like abrupt changes of the model equations or even jumps in the state variables, especially when generating directional derivatives needed for internal differentiation. We will show that under certain assumptions that comprise a large class of discontinuous effects, the internal numerical differentiation approach in connection with handling state events by root finding, it is possible to obtain the necessary derivative information in a correct and reliable way.

In contrast to the a priori work of an architect who constructs a new building, the computer reconstruction of existing (old or ancient) buildings faces a serious problem: The computer model copies the real world not vice versa. This leads to the question of model abstraction. While the real world building features a vast amount of detail, the model has to reduce these details to a point where a computer model is small enought to be managable by current hardand software. The Angkor Temple Generator, which we developed over the last five years, addresses this dilemma behind the modelling process and exemplifies a modular solution for a defined class of buildings. In this paper we present the example of temple columns to explain the methods we use in the ATG for modelling Angkor style temples efficiently and with a high level of detail. Analyzing temples of the style of Angkor (Cambodia) leads to the constr...
