In the following I will illustrate on one example, the Neogramscian approach of Robert Cox, how global correlations of social forces, forms of state and global orders profoundly affect International Migration processes and should be considered by theoretical debates in Migration Studies. Furthermore, I will show how the specific perspective of social transformation in combination with the awareness of local rescaling processes can be a promising extension for the research of Migration Systems.

How can we avoid a whole generation of Syrians losing out on an education? What are the pitfalls and windfalls for European labour markets and how will this change integration policies and societies on the ground?

Expert practitioners and academics discussed these crucial questions during a panel debate at the Hertie School of Governance on October 26th 2015, moderated by László Andor, former EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs.

In five years (from 2009 to 2014) Stephen Castles and his team at the University of Sydney worked closely with researchers from South Korea, Turkey and Mexico to develop a new, multi-scalar approach, and generate empirical data from case studies across four countries. The book Social Transformation and Migration – National and Local Experiences in South Korea, Turkey, Mexico and Australia presents their key ideas and findings. It is already a benchmark in migration studies and will influence forthcoming migration policies.

I seek to illustrate the normative potential of super-diversity for local politics by looking at the current state of Berlin’s integration measures in times of greater pressure resulting from the so-called “migration crisis” of 2015. A special focus will be put on long-term efforts to integrate second-generation migrants into the local labor market by managing the transition process from school to apprenticeship and employment.
