sich diese zu einem blutigen Konflikt ausgeweitet. Im Juli 2013 haben die Vereinten Nationen (UN)
geschätzt, dass mehr als 100.000 Menschen seit März 2011 getötet wurden, während Millionen of-
fiziell registrierte und nicht registrierte Flüchtlinge über Ägypten bis in die Türkei und darüber hin-
aus verstreut und schätzungsweise 4,25 Millionen Menschen im Land selbst verschoben wurden.

Dabei ist es wichtig, die Rolle der verschiedenen Disziplinen der Wissenschaft zu betrachten. In diesem Essay werde ich versuchen, diese Problematik ein wenig zu beleuchten; aus kultureller, soziologischer, aber sicher auch aus naturwissenschaftlicher Sicht. Eine Diskussion sollte aber auch religiöse Aspekte, evtl. sogar die Rolle der Kirche, berühren.

The authors describe a practical approach to handling data flooding that is based on the ideas of... more The authors describe a practical approach to handling data flooding that is based on the ideas of the forthcoming IEEE standard on the medical information bus (MIB). A bedside communication controller (BCC) is used. One BCC should be able to control up to 25 devices. Each device is connected to the BCC through a DCC (device communication controller) by means of a bus system rather than point to point as the MIB standard proposes. It is planned that the bus system will allow autoidentification of the DCC (or the devices) and recognition of connect/disconnect of the individual DCC/device. The concept also allows for the integration of BCC and host functions into a bedside workstation

The dual computer system, PCP (Pump Control Program), communicates with up to 192 infusion pumps and 64 urine monitors. These medical devices are connected to the PCP by a hardware multiplexer and two normal RS 232C lines per computer. The medical devices are polled every minute by the PCP, which communicates with the departmental computer system, IUSY (a German acronym for integrated system for monitoring), every 30 minutes when operating on a periodic basis or immediately when requested to do so.<>

In the daily routine of an SICU, particularly in cardiac surgery, the nurses are to an increasing... more In the daily routine of an SICU, particularly in cardiac surgery, the nurses are to an increasing extent confronted with problems of connecting and using medical instruments as well as with documentation of the data of these instruments. An increasing number of user errors is to be expected. Use of advanced computer technology can help avoid such errors. In this paper the system &amp;#39;ALODIN&amp;#39; is presented which is developed in our institutions according to the IEEE standard &amp;#39;Medical Information Bus&amp;#39; (MIB). ALODIN-I will be part of a CCCS (computerized critical care system) which is installed in the clinic for cardiovascular surgery at Medical School Hannover.

The very good ideas of the proposed "Standard for Medical Device Communication" (SMDC —... more The very good ideas of the proposed "Standard for Medical Device Communication" (SMDC — IEEE P 1073), formerly known as "Medical Information Bus (MIB)", have partially been implemented within the project ALODIN of the above mentioned academic institutions. The industrial product MCARE of MedKom is a spin off of ALODIN. The paper describes the way ALODIN does and does not conform to the SMDC thus avoiding from our viewpoint some of the drawbacks of the forthcoming standard. In addition a device of the urine collection (UR) class has been developed as an introductory example of SMDC device design.
