High levels of social support and optimism at the start of chemotherapy predicted higher numbers of perceived positive changes and lower numbers of negative changes nine months later. Higher numbers of perceived gains predicted an increase in positive affect, and higher numbers of negative changes predicted an increase in negative affect at follow-up. We conclude that finding positive consequences of cancer promotes psychological well-being, but patients with low levels of psychosocial resources are at risk for finding nothing beneficial in adversity.

Patients and methods A sample of 153 cancer patients was assessed before the start of chemotherapy and about 9 months later. Purpose in life was measured with a German version of Crumbaugh and Maholick's purpose in life test, and the perceived importance of social, psychological, materialistic, and health-related goals was assessed with Likert scales. Main results High importance of social, psychological, and health-related goals was related to higher purpose in life. In addition, having high levels of social goals at the first time of measurement predicted an increase in purpose of life over time. However, higher importance of material goals was associated with lower purpose in life at the second time of measurement and with a decline of purpose in life over time. Conclusions There is continuity and change in the sources of purpose in life during cancer therapy, and a lack of fit between goals and changed living conditions is a risk factor for a decline in purpose in life.

The PYD perspective has arisen as well through the development and, in some cases, the evaluation of interventions designed and delivered within community-based, youth serving programs that have worked to counter what have been seen as steady states across the past five to six decades of substantial incidences of risk behaviours among adolescents. This book discusses several of the key models of PYD framing the literature of developmental science. In addition, we illustrate the use of the PYD perspective in understanding adolescent development in relation to the multiple contexts of youth development and in promoting PYD through community-based interventions or social policy. In turn, this chapter rationalizes and explains the foci of this book by discussing the origins and the features of the PYD perspective.

First, we examined how aspects of parenting and adolescent's cognitive ability predicted adolescent academic capability beliefs and school grades at 6th grade, which, in turn, predicted adolescent school outcomes at 9th grade. Second, we examined how configurations of adolescents (based on cognitive ability, parental involvement, and capability beliefs) at 6th grade, related to their school grades at 9th grade. The sample included 641 German adolescents. The first set of analyses suggest that parents who demonstrated more warmth, engaged in more discussions concerning academic and intellectual matters with their adolescents, had higher school aspirations for their adolescents, and reported more interest/ involvement in their adolescent's schooling, had adolescents with higher capability beliefs at 6th grade, and this, in turn, related to better school grades for adolescents at 9th grade. In the second set of analyses, results show that adolescents who were characterized by the configuration of having above average ability, parental school involvement and capability beliefs, received the best school grades. In contrast, adolescents who were characterized by below average ability, parental school involvement and capability beliefs, demonstrated the worst school performance.

Research paper thumbnail of The Challenges of Diaspora Migration: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Israel and Germany

Diaspora or 'ethnic return' migrants have often been privileged in terms of citizenship and mater... more Diaspora or 'ethnic return' migrants have often been privileged in terms of citizenship and material support when they seek to return to their ancestral land, yet for many, after long periods of absence - sometimes extending to generations - acculturation to their new environment is as complex as that experienced by other immigrant groups. Indeed, the mismatch between the idealized hopes of the returning migrants and the high expectations for social integration by the new host country results in particular difficulties of adaptation for this group of immigrants, often with high societal costs. This interdisciplinary, comparative volume examines migration from German and Jewish Diasporas to Germany and Israel, examining the roles of origin, ethnicity, and destination in the acculturation and adaptation of immigrants. The book presents results from various projects within a large research consortium that compared the adaptation of Diaspora immigrants with that of other immigrant groups and natives in Israel and Germany. With close attention to specific issues relating to Diaspora immigration, including language acquisition, acculturation strategies, violence and 'breaches with the past', educational and occupational opportunities, life course transitions and preparation for moving between countries, The Challenges of Diaspora Migration will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in migration and ethnicity, Diaspora and return migration.

Much of the psychological research in the last century has been conducted in the global North Wes... more Much of the psychological research in the last century has been conducted in the global North West; hence, many prevailing theories and methodologies reflect the philosophical framework and shared cultural knowledge of this region. Other world views and cultural contexts have, as yet, not had the same opportunity to develop scientific insights that come to the attention of global audiences.Psychology Education and Trainingis the first truly international effort to generate a framework for common standards in psychological education and training across the globe.
Psychologists have long studied human beings in their socio-cultural context. New challenges such as globalisation and the relationship of the brain and behavior require that education and training keep pace with these rapidly evolving developments. The chapters in this book were generated by an international conference which resulted in the Dornburg Accord. While anchored in higher education, the focus is on the generative and translational psychological science needed to fulfill psychology's responsibility to society.Psychology Education and Trainingis the first book of its kind to cover both historic strengths and the requirements of emerging fields. The book deals with balancing the universalities and cultural specificities of psychological processes, the adjustments to academic curricula required to support national needs, as well as the credentials and regulations required to assure the quality of psychological services.
Psychology Education and Trainingis unique in providing initial data and concurrent assessment of various components of education and training in psychology across the globe. The book is a must for faculty members, advanced students of psychology and policy-makers who are interested in the issues that shape their societies.

In this innovative volume, Rainer K. Silbereisen and Xinyin Chen bring together, for the first time, international experts in the field to examine how changes in our social world impact on our individual development.
Divided into four parts, the book explores the major socio-political and technological changes that have taken place around the world - from post- from the rapid upheavals in 1990s Europe to the gradual changes in parts of East Asia - and explains how these developments interplay with human development across the lifespan.

Human Development and Social Change is a useful resource for students and researchers involved in all areas of human development, including developmental psychology, sociology and education.

Research paper thumbnail of Transitions from School to Work: Globalization, Individualization, and Patterns of Diversity

This volume made an important contribution to the growing literature on the transition from schoo... more This volume made an important contribution to the growing literature on the transition from school to work. It provides a different perspective on the global changes that have transformed school-to-work transitions since the 1970s; offers an integrative conceptual framework for analysis; and promotes a comparative, cross-national understanding of school-to-work transitions in a changing social context. The articles assembled in this volume compare and assess variations in school-to-work transitions across Europe and North America, providing empirical evidence on how young people negotiate the different options and opportunities available and assessing the costs and returns associated with different transition strategies. Unlike many other volumes on this subject - which are pitched at either the macro or micro level - this volume attempts to integrate both perspectives, capturing the complexity of this critical life course transition. Furthermore, the authors address policies aimed at improving the capacity of individuals to make effective transitions and at enabling societies to better coordinate educational and occupational institutions.

Brings together findings from large scale longitudinal and census data, as well as qualitative studies, offering insights from a variety of perspectives, and providing evidence from across Europe and the US

Considers an assessment of the impact of macro level change on micro level experiences and decision making, and the link of work transitions to transitions in other domains, such as partnership and family formation

Discusses individual agency, institutional filters, transition demands, developmental regulation, personal resources, individual coping, control striving, and psycho-social outcomes

Research paper thumbnail of Approaches to Positive Youth Development

Scientific research and science-guided practice based on the promotion of an individual's strengt... more Scientific research and science-guided practice based on the promotion of an individual's strengths constitutes a radical shift in a new and growing area of study within the field of human development. Its trademark term is `positive youth development'. This approach to human development is based on the idea that, in addition to preventing problems, science and practice should promote the development of competencies, skills, and motivation in order to enhance individuals' developmental pathways.
Approaches to Positive Youth Development, is based on this concept and brings together authors from across Europe and America who are leaders in their respective fields. The main focus of the book, beyond a clarification of the paradigmatic foundations, concerns the major contexts of adolescents and young adults, namely, neighbourhoods and leisure locales, school and family, and the major themes of healthy psychosocial development, namely, competences and knowledge, prosocial behaviour, transcending problems of delinquency, civic engagement, identity, agency, and spirituality.
