Adorno of the »Frankfurt School«, Max Horkheimer’s critiques of enlightenment, modern thought and instrumental reason remain to be some of the most powerful and controversial discussed statements in 20th century political and social thought. In this essay, Horkheimer’s thoughts will be compared with those of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, who appears to be the most prominent critic of modern thought and a scientific understanding of reason at the beginning of the 21st century. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI quoted Horkheimer and Adorno in his papal encyclical Spe Salvi about the Christian understanding of hope. Despite many differences in their works there are also some visible similarities within the origins, developments and formulations inside the thinking of Horkheimer and Ratzinger. Their views on totalitarianism, scientific reason and religion will be described as well as their role in an »enlightened enlightenment« which tries to save the strengths of enlightenment thought and renouncing its weaknesses.
