Other national media policy objectives, such as quality and responsibility of the mass media, safety, and sustainability of the media environment, are also related to society's media literacy. Aligning policy measures with the changing challenges of modern media use is not an easy task. Without systematic research, policy makers lack an in-depth understanding of the needs of media users and cannot be accurate in providing support mechanisms. By adopting a mediatization framework, this study seeks to dissect the symbiotic relationship between media and society within a mediatized context, paying particular attention to how media logic intertwines with various social subsystems and influences the trajectory of media policy development, specifically in the realm of media literacy. Drawing upon bibliographic data from the Mediadelcom project and conducting a meticulous content analysis of national media policy documents, we critically evaluate the media literacy policies in Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania, and Slovakia. The study aims to underscore how an overreliance on media logic and negligence of audience needs thwarts the efficacy of media literacy policies, ultimately hindering their capacity to fulfil their intended objectives. This research endeavours to illuminate these dynamics, providing valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers striving to enhance media literacy and foster a more informed, responsible, and resilient media landscape.

Even though there appears to be an obvious link between these two facts, both the Internet and digital media are a much broader phenomenon than journalism. This chapter first provides a brief overview of the genesis of the Internet and the breadth of the use of the web. Based on this framework, it analyses changes in journalism since the early 1990s in six European countries: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The authors take into account the state of the media systems and journalism in each country prior to the ascent of the web and then discuss further developments and changes in journalism.

Thus, investigating the participation of women in journalism can also be seen as an analysis of power in the sense of control over (information) resources. Based on one of Foucault's concepts, the study differentiates between changes in the distribution of power inside journalism ('power to') and those forces that had sufficient power ('power over') to promote the involvement of women in the business of daily journalism in Austria during one of its heydays in the 1920s. The editorial line, which provides the central rationale for journalistic action, and market orientation, which provides the main rationale for entrepreneurial action, are considered as the two main factors capable of influencing the participation of women in journalistic power. Furthermore, we ask for biographical circumstances, which promoted women's career opportunities within this male-dominated business.

Using the notion of curiosity as a core attribute of human beings at the intersection point of media use and public communication, this chapter aimed to analyze and to describe – based on German illustrated broadsheets – the relationship between audiences and the new media of printing during early modern history. This relation is characterized to a large extent by the direct interaction of producer, seller, and sometimes even performer, of the news on the one hand, and the audiences on the other. As the findings have shown, unsurprisingly, most of the broadsheets were concerned with confessional and religious issues. However, audiences were also addressed directly as consumers of the printed products in order to advertise the other broadsheets and pamphlets that the printers and sellers had in their portfolios. The audiences were invited most frequently to lead Christian lives, to listen to, read, and watch the broadsheets, and finally, to buy more of them, because the printing business had indeed been a business since its earliest days.

Moreover, the particular perception of the web is to a large extent affected by the traditional media. Against this background the study analyses on a historical basis the content of the traditional media, i.e. newspapers and journals, dealing with topics related to the web. The results of the study foster the assumption that – at least in Germany – traditional media coverage on the Internet and digital media and today social media as well is strongly influenced by a competition between the old and the new media. At the same time the results of the Austrian data show a more neutral attitude toward the web. In order to assess these differences, further international comparative studies are needed.

A primary function of data centres over the next decades will consist of supporting the transition to automated economies with the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learningand robotics into processes of capital valorisation and accumulation. Stemming from a project that investigates data centres in Asia, this contribution positions the age of automation in terms of the spatial politics of data infrastructures. Singapore is renowned as a growth centre for data storage facilities in Asia. Yet the policy literature on smart nations lacks narratives that address the political and social problem of job loss precipitated by automated futures. Because data centres are themselves automated environments and provide infrastructure that enables automation in workplaces spread across geographical scales, they offer a strategic object for research on the varied implications of automation for labour.
