This paper presents findings from an in-depth, multiorganisational study that examines the drivers and barriers of ECS-enabled change from two perspectives: i) the company initiating and driving the project and ii) key practitioners responsible for delivering the change. Data is collected from ECS using companies via a survey and face-to-face workshops, analysed using qualitative content analysis methods to identify categories of change and then synthesised to provide a rich classification and visualisation of the drivers, barriers, motivations and pain points (DBMP) to ECS-enabled change. This is followed by a discussion of the similarities and differences between drivers and barriers from both personal and company perspectives. The paper concludes by exploring the potential of the research and visualisation methods used in this work to provide the foundation for the longitudinal study of ECS-enabled change.

Our findings reveal six distinctive workplace designs. Three people-focused designs supporting different levels of sophistication of interaction between people working together to create and share information, and three process-focused designs supporting joint work towards business improvement projects and integration with business processes and with other enterprise systems. The findings show how the digital workplace is being interpreted differently and being shaped by organizations to meet specific organizational requirements.

The objectives and motivations of UIC have been discussed widely and controversially in the literature. We were particularly interested in the perceived benefits and barriers that influence an individual researcher to engage (or not engage) in a joint research project. An in-depth literature analysis showed that a very small number of research articles contain empirical data and that there are serious methodological issues. In order to address these issues, we collected primary data from 328 IS researchers with experience in UIC and conducted an explorative study. We developed parsimonious formative measures for the benefits and barriers of UIC and we found that acade...

The objectives and motivations of UIC have been discussed widely in the literature and are summarised in this article. We were particularly interested in the factors that influence the setup of research projects that make them a 'successful' UIC. The paper reports on the results of a questionnaire-based survey of UIC and interviews with senior IS scholars, who have extensive experience in UIC. We present typical forms of collaboration, which we call archetypes, with their defining characteristics and argue that UIC is a valuable research strategy, which we as IS researchers should pursue in order to obtain relevance in our research.

The survey explores five key areas: drivers and capabilities of EIM; current status of EIM strategies; EIM content and technologies; EIM and compliance; and the changing role of the information professional. The survey reveals that the drivers for EIM cannot be simply reduced to a series of technical or organizational needs and that EIM is a complex sociotechnical phenomenon. A fine balance is required to achieve business performance objectives whilst at the same time also meeting conformance requirements. To date, few organizations have implemented enterprise-wide EIM strategies; however those who do have them are better able to keep track of, and achieve, performance objectives. In terms of technologies and content the landscape is complex with organizations focusing their efforts into managing and reducing this complexity. Finally infor...

These collaborative activities leave digital traces in the form of social documents, which can be analyzed to understand how employees work together to coordinate their joint work. In this paper, we present the findings of a research project to visualize the structure of social documents to prepare them for analysis as traces of collaborative activity. Using the representation of social documents defined in the Social Document Ontology (SocDOnt), we draw on concepts from graph theory to develop a method for the graphical visualization of social documents. Applying this method to analyze the social documents in an operational enterprise collaboration platform, we identify and display different types of social documents and define their characteristic structure. Our findings provide the necessary foundation for conducting computational ethnographies of collaborative work.

Enterprise collaboration platforms are large scale, highly integrated information infrastructures... more Enterprise collaboration platforms are large scale, highly integrated information infrastructures that enable many hundreds of employees to work collaboratively and share information. In this paper, we lay the theoretical and analytical foundations for the use of social documents as digital traces of collaborative activity in enterprise collaboration platforms. Through a review of related research and an empirical analysis of social documents, we identify key concepts and structures, providing the foundation for the Social Document Ontology (SocDOnt). SocDOnt expresses the generic structure of social documents and extends previous work in two important ways. At the micro-level a social document is defined as a composition of an intellectual entity enhanced by both intellectual and simple components and at the macro-level a collection is defined as an aggregation of social documents. These analytical constructs enable a more nuanced and granular analysis of social documents to understand collaborative activity in enterprise collaboration platforms.

We begin with an examination of the motivations and theoretical foundations for the initiative, which brings together researchers and practitioners to investigate the design of the digital workplace and the use of enterprise collaboration systems. We discuss the arrangements, structures and research methods used and the challenges and rewards of practice-based research. These include: aligning stakeholder interests, serving both theoretical and practical outcomes and the role of research training and mentoring in the process of community building.

Value generation in itself, however, does not necessarily translate to competitiveness. A key question has been whether organizations can realize temporary or sustainable competitive advantage through the use of business software. Applying theories of strategic positioning and the resource-based view, this paper presents findings from 10 case studies and evaluates to what extent the value contribution from IT investments can lead to (sustainable) competitive advantage. While all of the case studies report value contribution and a state of process excellence, actual competitive advantages are found to be only temporary, with one exception. In conclusion, we review competitive advantage theory and its taxonomy. The results lead us to call for a refinement of taxonomy and a paradigm shift.

It is likely that the companies that participated in the study are "early movers", who decided at an early stage to embrace the opportunities and challenges that come from the introduction of social software in the work environment. This includes, most impor-tantly, the management of the organisational change, which is triggered by an ECS introduction. The study shows that companies are using integrated software packages (suites) and portfolios of dif-ferent software products to setup their ECS. The resulting heterogeneity provides a challenge for the operation as well as the use collaboration software. For the users it creates uncertainties with respect to choosing the "right" tool for a specific task and the federated search across heterogeneous tools is rarely in place (without a large integration effort). At the same time, assessing the benefits and the success of an interorganizational system is still a challenge. Academia and businesses alike struggle with insufficient assessment methods and benefits measurement processes. Our research applies and extends a recently developed framework for the assessment of expected and realized benefits in IS implementation projects (expectations-benefits framework). The framework was developed using an established case study methodology (eXperience methodology) including more than 140 case studies of real-world IS projects. In this paper we selected a sample of 16 suitable cases for the study of inter-organizational information systems and found 190 realized and 59 unexpected benefits in the described implementation projects. The findings show several patterns in the benefits in relation to the existing integration scenarios and the benefits categories.

Using an interpretive research process we apply thematic content analysis to the case documents to identify key themes in the introduction of collaborative technologies. The coding process yielded 184 individual codes which were grouped into 28 themes. These themes are discussed and the findings presented using the 8C Framework. The findings indicate a complex array of methods, processes and strategies for the management of change.
