The result can be envisioned as the potential ‘ladder of the CLIL & architecture integration‘. The system would be of help to anyone trying to integrate language learning at different stages of architectural education, pointing out the required fundamentals, predicting the possible learning outcomes or benchmarking them after the experience. The basic terms/variables divided into three major influencing groups competence, work environment and course settings are descri...

The paper continues a discussion-forum, which raises and discusses open questions of joint curriculum development in the field of virtual space design. The starting points of the discussion can be found in the ongoing endea- vours of the e-Learning project entitled VIPA, fol- low-up Erasmus intensive programme (IP) DIVE and the current curricular changes in the 'new' EU countries following relevant directives and decla- rations. The main goal of this forum is the devel- opment of the specific criteria for quality assur - ance, to enhance the motivation of joint curricular developments and to find suitable and most practi - cal paths towards joint curriculum developments in the field mentioned. The main aim is to enhance and promote place-sensitive interventions in physical and virtual worlds. The paper concludes with a discussion of intentions, experience gained, some sobering moments as well as the learning curves of participants and organizers when it comes to design culmination of sensitive physical and virtual realities.

The persistence of difficulties related to communication of the participants in the design proces... more The persistence of difficulties related to communication of the participants in the design process is mainly due to the diversity of interests and the abilities of visual communication. The research presented has been focused especially on the first issue professional vs. general public relations. It builds on the idea that general public should be approached with both: adaptation to its abilities and with additional teaching to improve these abilities. The initial questions lead to the isolation of (i) elements and (ii) characteristics that could possibly define architectural educational interfaces for general public. The experiment puts the prototypical eco-spatial interface to the test in primary schools and observes the effect the level of interactivity has on learning outcomes. The results show possible ways of enhancing the efficiency of GUI-s and help developers and designers evaluate and fine-tune such tools for the process of general architectural learning.

For visions to be shared and planning processes to be inclusive the involvement of all (urban) actors is paramount. With the increasing urban complexity and the interrelation of phenomena there is also an increasing demand for updated, advanced and re-thought digital tools that could help in forming and enabling such common urban visions. The paper outlines the agenda and connects our on-going research efforts with the fields deemed most crucial for inclusive-for-all, successful participation that can lead to shared visions of future cities. Standing out in interchangeable order and never-ending cyclic process are: (1) education, (2) communication and (3) collaboration.

The eCAADe 2006 theme offers the opportunity to investigate the topic from the aspect of virtual space design, especially within the second conference topic: communicating within mediated spaces (CVE-s). The paper proposed initiates a discussion-forum to raise and discuss open questions of joint curriculum development in the field of virtual space design, especially where CVE-s take the key role within the educational process. The starting points of the discussion can be found in the ongoing endeavours of the e-Learning project entitled VIPA and the current curricular changes in the ‘new’ EU countries following relevant directives and declarations. The main goal of this forum is the development of the specific criteria for quality assurance, to enhance the motivation of joint curricular developments in the field mentioned.

The initial premise proposes the mechanism for traceable linkage between the basic, mostly visible elements and features in the urban space, and three qualities concerning actual use: (a) access to the space, (b) movement within and through the space and (c) permitted/ tolerated and stimulated sojourning of the users in the space. The model aims to assist with bridging the communicational gap between expert and lay public occurring in the formal or informal process of spatial co-deciding, by increasing comprehension of spatial complexities and hence developing common priorities concerning spatial values.

The paper delves extensively into communication abilities and divides between experts and non-experts, exploring their epistemological origins and possible solutions. One of them, education about spatial issues for general public, is argued for and supported by in the form of a digital education tool. The reduction of energy consumption and energy efficient built environments are key objectives of many sustainability agendas which is followed by suitable assessment methods in urban analytics. However, there are two important hesitations occurring: first, traditional assessment methods that focus solely on the energy reduction and efficiency are often too narrow in their analysis and limited in their scope of impact. According to the recent advances in research worldwide, efforts solely related to reduction of energy consumption will unlikely lead to more responsive environments or rise the living quality. Thus, more comprehensive methodologies for assessing and monitoring the change and transformation in built environments shall be soug...

The purpose of this paper is to trace spatial identity’s formulation, reflection and perception within the mainstream media. The authors are particularly interested in spatial identity’s general aspect, consisting of architectural and other elements that give spatial character to places, making them both common and recognisable at the same time. The proposed spatial identity presence index is one of the indicators through which stakeholders in cultural heritage management could monitor, and even manage, the public perception of built heritage’s wider context. Design/methodology/approach The research seeks wider relevance through the development of new methodology that combines web search services, visual data quantification, and data mining methods, and compares this with expert opinion. The research methodology is showcased and established in terms of the connection between the fundamental work in relation to Slovenian architectural landscapes from the pre-internet era and spatial identity’s web reflection as broadcast and collectively co-shaped by the internet-permeated society more than 20 years after the internet’s inception. Findings The findings indicate that results based on expert opinion and results acquired by counting spatial character carrier elements are aligned. Originality/value The introduced index of web-sourced spatial identity presence measures web-projected spatial characteristics in selected settlements. It is applicable in similar cases where the existing body of work on local spatial identity allows it, and can be used for comparative purposes. It also has social, economic and political connotations.

Through visual and socially ‘inherited’ clues, the authors explain the complexities of urban spaces, their elements, interrelations and cause–effect phenomena to expert and non-expert public alike. The rules, syntax and overall advantages of such a vocabulary are grounded in the existing linguistic, cognitive, psychological theories, visual sociology and theories of urban design, combined and supported by the authors’ own research into visualizations and tools for evaluating, understanding and presenting urban spaces. With many illustrations, the article demonstrates the use for – and the use of – generic urban stories in discussions about urbanity, urban environments, livable places, etc. and positions them into educational, research and participatory planning and ...
