This treatise wastranslatedbythe members of the Brotherhood from Greek into Slavonic and printed simultaneously in both languages without the participation of Meletios, who had never visited the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Thisfact raises some questions that need to be addressed in the followingchapter. Why did the Greek hierarch compose atext against Jews in the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 16 th century? And why was this treatise published in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth? The first question needs to be answered in the contexto fG reek-Jewish polemics in the Ottoman Empire. After all, some scholars claim that after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Greek hierarchs were no longer interested in disputes with Jews, "as it wasthe order of the day to take acritical look at the followers of Islam". 2 This is the assertion of Andreas Külzer (1999), who-as had previouslyA. Lukyn Williams (1935)-consideredthe anti-Jewish dialogue by the Patriarch of Constantinople Gennadios Scholarios (1464) to be the last example (or at least one of the last examples) of post-Byzantine polemics against Jews. 3 Even about 1 The British Library General Catalogue,321, no. 868a21. 2S ee Andreas Külzer, DisputationesGraecae contra Iudaeos. The donors promise to donate every year a sum of 130 duсats to the Hilandar Monastery during their lifetime to be considered as founders and renovators (ктитори и обновители) of this great imperial (царски) monastery. In return for their yearly donation, they expect to participate in the life of the monastery and to be commemorated together with their deceased relatives-Stefan and Dmitar Jakšić. Their names have to be written down in the commemorative book of the monastery. The other prescriptions contain a detailed list of commemorative services that the donors and their deceased relatives expect from the monks for their donation.

Two case studies from medieval Serbia are examined to demonstrate the peculiarities of the relationship between female rulers and bishops, as well as of the different forms and aspects of female patronage of monasticism, like founding and donating to monasteries or commissioning liturgical books. One of the most important questions concerns the motivation of women for patronizing monks. It is suggested that there was some interplay in cooperation between female patrons and monks. The question is posed whether prayers, commemoration, spiritual guidance and even the composing of a vita (i.e. contributing to the veneration of a new saint) may be understood as a form of compensation on the part of the monks towards female patrons.

The main focus is on the phenomenon of the „mobile“ printers and moving presses. The fact that in this early phase of printing in the Ottoman Empire had not existed an official state interest in printing Muslim literature made it necessary for Jews and Christians to transfer printing facilities and skills from abroad, especially from the most famous center of printing production like the city of Venice. The main focus is on the migration of printers (and presses) from the Jewish, Armenian, Serbian and Greek communities in the „transottoman“ context.

The work is primarily based on textual analysis of correspondence between Serbian American-Canadian Bishop Dionysius and Patriarch Alexius I. It examines the activities of the Serbian diaspora in achieving improvements in the situation of the Church in Yugoslavia, its attempts to influence the “Macedonian Church issue”, as well as the contacts of bishop Dionysius with the ROC after the schism within SOC in America in 1963.

It is argued that during the period of Late Antiquity it was predominantly noble women who contributed to the shaping of the historical and symbolical sacral space of the Holy Land. Examining medieval vitae and pilgrimage descriptions it is possible to understand the importance of the Holy Land for gendered piety, and to discover the differences in Western and Byzantine pilgrimage traditions and religious and legal practices. The main focus is on selected texts of the East Slavic and the eastern portion of the South Slavic traditions which describe the sacral space of Jerusalem within the discourse of depicting female religiosity based on images from the New Testament: the Old Russian Vita of St. Eufrosinija of Polotsk, as well as the South Slavic miscellanies the Bdinski sbornik (Bulgarian) and the Gorički zbornik (Serbian).

The main interest of Soviet officials in religious affairs was focused on the relationship with the Serbian Orthodox Church and its patriarch Gavriil, who was seen as the most reliable partner in negotiations because of his course on normalization of Church-state relations in Yugoslavia as well as cooperation with socialist authorities in the country and in socialist Russia. At the same time his negative attitude towards Vatican and thereafter towards Western Europe made him attractive to the representatives of the Soviet side. In its turn the activity of Catholic Church in Croatia and Slovenia was considered as more hostile towards the socialist regime, first of all because of the negative perception of the Vatican`s Ostpolitik, but also because of the conservative position of Catholic clergy in Yugoslavia.

Ukraine und Ukrainische Geschichte unter Beschuss. Historische Perspektiven im transepochalen und transregionalen Zugriff
Unter Mitarbeit von Stefan Rohdewald (guest ed.)
Russia's extremely brutal war of aggression against Ukraine is directed against all Ukrainians and everything Ukrainian, against Ukrainian history and its ideas of an independent belonging to Europe. This volume brings together perspectives from international scholars living in Germany, including Ukrainian historians who have fled, on Ukrainian history under the conditions of the Russian war of aggression. Staged as a re-enactment of the so-called "Great Patriotic War", Russia's war has the obviously national-Russian and neo-imperial goal of "de-Ukrainizing" Ukraine. This sharpens the focus on historical distinctions between Ukraine and Russia. The contributors work out these differences and discuss (anti-/post-/ and de-) colonial perspectives on recent and modern history, the early modern period and the late Middle Ages. In addition, they outline transnational and transregional approaches to Ukrainian history within the framework of postcolonial historiography using the example of a Transottoman perspective, which makes a common Middle Eastern and Eastern European history the object of investigation.

The volume investigates flows of knowledge that transcended social, cultural, linguistic and political boundaries. Dealing with different sources such as dictionaries, early printed books, political advice literature, and modern periodicals, the case studies in this anthology cover a time frame from the 15th to the early 20th century. Being concerned with a wide variety of geographical areas, including the Ottoman capital Istanbul, provincial settings like Ottoman Palestine, and also Egypt, Bosnia, Crimea, the Persian realm and Poland-Lithuania, this volume gives transepochal and transregional insights in the production, transmission, and translation of knowledge. In so doing it contributes to current debates in transcultural studies, global history, and the history of knowledge.
