To do so, it fi rst takes a look at the notion of creation and creativity in Lowland South American anthropology, then outlines recent shifts within the anthropology of creation and creativity, and finally introduces this book’s contributions.

Research paper thumbnail of The Maize Bringer’s Creative Potentials: How People and the Maize Bringer Co-actively Ensure the Continuous Existence of Maize in the Yukpa Territory of Sokorpa, Northern Colombia

Halbmayer & Goletz. Creation and Creativity in Indigenous Lowland South America. Anthropological Perspectives, 2023

In Sokorpa, a Yukpa community in the Serranía de Perijá in Northern Colombia, storytellers narrat... more In Sokorpa, a Yukpa community in the Serranía de Perijá in Northern Colombia, storytellers narrate how Unano the maize bringer once brought maize to the Yukpa people and imparted knowledge on its cultivation, harvesting, and processing, as well as on appropriate ways of paying tribute to him. Unano, however, is important not only as part of the origin of maize and maize-related practices but also as a present-day agent whose reproductive, rewarding, and instructive potentials pervade people’s everyday lives. Th e activation of Unano’s creative potentials and the cooperation of people and Unano in the cultivation, harvesting, and processing procedures are essential to the persistence of maize. In this chapter, I consider the joint practices of Unano and the people in Sokorpa as constituting a creative process that ensures the continuous existence
of maize.
The chapter builds on empirical material but pursues a predominantly analytical approach. Based on the analyses I will make three points: fi rst, that the creative process to ensure the continuous existence of
maize is carried out by people and the maize-producing Unano, whereas the maize’s own creative potential is just marginally involved; second, that this creative process builds on mimetic coactivity similar to what Perig Pitrou (2016) has shown for Andean and Mesoamerican agricultural and rainmaking rituals; and third, that the creative process is coordinated and synchronized not only by human ritual action but by Unano himself who plays a crucial role in generating mimetic coactivity

However, in recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the narrowness of this concept by focusing on Indigenous and pre-Columbian societies, who favore(d) non-glottographic systems over written speech. This paper concerns the development of a semiological multidimensional theory and methodology to analyze Indigenous Graphic Communication Systems (GCSs) in Mesoamerica, Amazonia, the Isthmo-Colombian Area and the Central Andes. The aim of this theory and methodology is to understand how and in what ways Indigenous societies communicate and encode knowledge using graphic units. Placing emic concepts and epistemologies increasingly at the center of the investigation comes with a rethinking of Western concepts of writing, and a change of perspective. The proposed model provides access to new analytical dimensions that have not been considered in an integrated way so far. Graphic units are not only studied in relation to each other and on the semantic level, but in the broader context in which they arise. Three examples are used to demonstrate the complexity of graphic communication based on semasiographic principles and test the proposed approach focusing on various forms of Yukpa graphic expressions in Colombia and Venezuela and framed graphic units of the Tiwanaku culture in the Central Andes, Peru. Keywords: graphic communication systems; the indigenous Americas; semiological theory and methodology; decolonizing epistemologies.

In the context of an Anthropology of Dreaming dominated by the notion of soul-travels, this paper discusses the passive and embodied manner of Sokorpa dream experiences shaped by the visit from the other-than-human realm into the dreamer's everyday life. Furthermore, it highlights the cooperative nature of the relationship between Diocelina and Kamashrhush against the backdrop of armadillohuman practices based on (respectful) hunting and avoidance. It proposes ontological similarization as a means for social interactions with other-than-human beings that go without transformation and ontological boundary crossing, elements considered as the core components of interspecies communication in Amazonian anthropological theories.

Amerindian Socio-Cosmologies between the Andes, Amazonia and Mesoamerica, 2020

In a nocturnal visit, these beings transmit their knowledge, thus initiating future specialists and determining the manner they will fulfill their societal duties. The chapter distinguishes between two manifestations of tuwancha that are associated with different transhuman relational modes. The coexistence of these relational modes in Sokorpa socio-cosmology is analyzed in the context of historical processes, sociocultural change, and the negotiation between the familiar and the incoming. The blending of the creator Aponto with the Christian God and the deification of the owner of corn Osema, as well as the emergence of tuwancha-who-preach represent important modifications in Sokorpa transhuman communication.

The volume shows how people create and reinforce their conditions of being by employing different genres of transgression and by creatively shifting contexts of significance. Local socio-cosmic orders, the interrelation of creative genres (myth, verbal art, song, ritual, and handicrafts), and their changing frames of reference (from communal celebrations to wider political and commercial realms) demonstrate the relational, generative, and processual quality of Amerindian creativity.
