Frames of movement are placed under scrutiny during the discourse analysis of the 2016 and 2021 election manifestos of the Scottish National Party and social media posts. In relation to metaphors of movement, images describing the future of an independent Scotland are also detected. The authors attempt to analyse and interpret findings both from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and ethno-symbolism. Apart from the texts of the manifestos, the timeframe of the research involved social media posts two months preceding and two months following the elections in both cases. Methodology was issuedriven and computer assisted but supervised: key words linked to movement were extracted from the manifestos and clustered. Their occurrence and frequency in the social media posts was checked. In the qualitative analysis phase, messages of the manifestos and of the posts were contrasted in order to answer our research question what kind of persuasive political discourse was used when options for the citizens were outlined.

The issue is examined from the aspect of communication theories, political discourse analysis and the history of propaganda. Methods developed for analysing and evaluating the content of media communication are referred to. The discourse analytical study of the articles on economic home pages reveals both their explicit and implicit content. Explicit content is represented by the structure, the stated topics and the rhetorical devices of the articles, and can be summarised as mostly arguments against the realisation of the project. The attitudes, assumptions and forecasts of the analysts are encoded in the texts implicitly. These can be detected in the use of discourse metaphors and analogies from the past as well as in the construction of future situation models. On one hand, they represent a clash of interests, on the other hand, they forecast possible counteraction and future conflicts along the route.

As it is known from strategic communication, business communication and political discourse analysis, the choice of words and phrases determines what cognitive scenarios are triggered in the minds of the news consumers. These are culture dependent, deeply rooted in communities, and shape the attitudes of the public. The study summarises some typical features of the reports on global news websites at the peak of the migration crisis in Europe from mid-August, 2015 to late October, 2015, and points out the impact of the model of reality presented by the news texts on the political management of the crisis. The analysis also focuses on which aspects are covered extensively and which ones are dismissed as insignificant or ignored, since these may provide possible clues to a better understanding of the background of the crisis.
