What distinguishes a legal tradition is its stock of rules of law, which, in the fashion of prove... more What distinguishes a legal tradition is its stock of rules of law, which, in the fashion of proverbs, capture and convey a basic legal principle in a brief and concise manner. Brocards, such as "Contracts must be kept" (Latin „Pacta sunt servanda“) or "Keep your eyes open, a purchase is a purchase", may even today be cited as living and still valid examples of such rule-making in Germany. This form of laying down rules of law has also been known and practised within Is-lamic jurisprudence (fiqh) for many centuries. The legal principles and maxims which are subsumed under the term qawāʿid fiqhiyya have made a major contri-bution to help systematise Islamic legal findings. The qawāʿid fiqhiyya find their most concise expression in the 99 general principles of the Ottoman-Ḥanafı civil code Maǧallat al-aḥkām al-ʿadliyya (or: Maǧalla, Turkish: Mecelle), which gained a high level of popularity and significance even beyond its area of validi-ty within the Ottoman Empire. The following article shall provide the reader with general information relating to the qawāʿid fiqhiyya and their history and significance in Islamic Law, after which a German translation of those 99 prin-ciples listed in the first part of the Maǧalla will ensue.

Die Sunna (Lebensweise) des Propheten stellt für Muslime eine wichtige Quelle für das Verhalten u... more Die Sunna (Lebensweise) des Propheten stellt für Muslime eine wichtige Quelle für das Verhalten und die Charakterfestigung dar. In der islamischen Welt hat sich die Tradition der "kitāb al-arbaʿīn" etabliert, in der die Gelehrten 40 Aussprüche des Propheten (Hadithen) auswählten und in Form eines Büchleins veröffentlichten. Das Institut für Islamische Theologie folgt dieser Tradition und präsentiert eine eigene Auswahl an 40 Prophetenaussprüchen in vier Sprachen: im arabischen Original und in den Übersetzungen Deutsch, Englisch und Türkisch. Daneben sind die Seiten geschmückt mit Marmorierungen (Ebru-Kunst) des zeitgenössischen Künstlers Hikmet Barutçugil aus Istanbul.
