In 1979 Pope John Paul II. declared Francis of Assisi (†1226), the famous founder of the Franciscan Order, the patron saint for those who care for ecological questions and realities. In doing so, the Catholic Church has officially accentuated one aspect of the incomparably rich and various medieval sources regarding the poor man of Assisi. It’s the aim of this article to trace Francis‘ attitude towards nature – i.e. God’s creation – and to contextualize it both in terms of what research brought to light regarding the „historical Francis“, and of how his heritage is approached today.

Mission -in association with learning foreign languages -was considered to comply with the Dominican order's purpose of preaching (praedicatio) for salvation (salus animarum).

It includes every literary genre and every topic of discussion that is related to the evolution of the relationship between the western and eastern parts of the Church, today identified as Catholic Church and Orthodox Church. The languages of RAP are Greek, Latin and Old Slavonic.
RAP focuses on those texts that are transmitted through the manuscript tradition: the chronological period covered is, therefore, from the Late Antiquity to the 16th century, the same period that is covered in the database Pinakes, with which RAP collaborates.
RAP is an Italian-French project supported by the following institutions: Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Ca’ Foscari SPIN Measure 2 and VeDPH - Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities), Collège de France, Laboratoire Orient et Méditerranée (CNRS, UMR 8167), and Labex RESMED.
The project is developed in close collaboration with the IRHT Section grecque, which manages and implements the Pinakes database.
