Based on speech data from children and adults in different contexts, we discuss different methods of measuring and analyzing inter-situational variation along the dialect and standard language spectrum. By contrasting measures of dialectality, on the one hand, and proportions of turns in dialect, standard language or intermediate/mixed forms on the other, we gain complementary insights not only into the individual dialect-standard repertoires but also into the consequences of different methodological choices. The results indicate that intra-individual variation is ubiquitous in adults and children and that individual repertoires need to be taken into account from the beginning of the language acquisition process. We suggest that while intra-individual variation can be attested through the use of various methods, the revealed level of granul...

From amongst all (approx. 70) relevant dissertations from this period, the following three broad thematic strands can be identified, for which a selection of exemplary dissertations was chosen to review: (1) Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL); (2) learning and teaching about culture in the language classroom; and (3) language teacher education. Categorization of themes was guided by a bottom-up approach, clustering thematically (rather than methodologically) similar works. We identify relevant topics and link these with trends in research methodology (qualitative/quantitative/mixed-methods). We also discuss the depth and breadth of these dissertations and situate their scholarly contributions within German and international research on language education.

The former is described as comprising a standard-dialect-continuum whereas the latter is allocated to the diglossic language area. The present paper investigates the existence and the quality of intermediate varieties between dialect and the standard variety in the two dialect regions of Austria. Furthermore, speakers’ awareness of varying their speech and the correspondence between their mental representations and actual language behaviour is examined. The analyses are based on data from an online-survey on the one hand and on actual language use by speakers from both dialect regions in telephone conversations with different interlocutors on the other hand. Preliminary analyses seem to contradict traditional assumptions about the two dialect regions but also the speakers’ self-reports to a certain extent, as there seem to be Bavarian speakers w...
