Optical and thermal infrared bands from Landsat and Corona together with SAR data from TerraSAR-X, ALOS/PALSAR have been used. Closed basin of Nam Co (‘Co’ means lake) (30° N, 90° E) has been selected as the study area. It belongs to the zone of discontinuous permafrost. Time series of Landsat data has been complemented by Corona image from 1965 and used to analyze changes of wetland area. Interpretation of wetlands from Corona image from 1965 features high quality. It was used as reference for comparison with time series of Landsat optical data with support of its thermal infrared band. Pauli decomposition image from ALOS PALSAR clearly has good potential usage in wetland mapping. The wetland area was relatively stable in the study region. Some parts of wetlands have been flooded by the lake transgression since 1965. In order to understand overall ...

The EU project "The Tisza River Project -Real-life scale integrated catchment models for supporting water-and environmental management decisions" deals with integrated catchment modelling to help solving the most critical water-and environmental problems in the Tisza River basin. Amongst the project's objectives is the derivation of spatial and temporal distributed parameter sets for modelling by means of remote sensing. The whole Tisza River basin is to be modelled in 250 m grid size whereas three selected sub-catchments are to be modelled in 50 m grid size. Oxbow water regime modelling will be performed in wetlands on 1 : 2000 scale. For that purpose Earth Observation (EO) data such as Terra MODIS, Landsat-7 ETM and QuickBird are investigated to classify landcover, and to derive vegetation indices.

The nine soil and lithological target classes were selected through fieldwork and laboratory analysis of soil samples. High-resolution WorldView-2 data, TerraSAR-X intensity data, medium-resolution ASTER spectral bands and indices, as well as ENVISAT ASAR intensity and SRTM-X-derived topographic parameters served as input features. Objects were derived from image segmentation. The classification of the image objects was conducted applying a nonlinear support vector machine approach. With the recursive feature elimination approach, the most input-relevant features for separating the target classes were selected. Despite multiple target classes, an overall accuracy of 71.9% was achieved. Inaccuracies occurred between classes with high CaCO3 content and between classes of silica-rich substrates. The incorporation of different input feature datasets improved the classification accuracy. An in-depth interpretation of the classification result was conducted with three soil profile transects.

The Dept. of Geoinformatics, Hydrology and Modelling of the FSU Jena, Germany, is responsible for the development and implementation of an inte-grated hybrid, internet accessible data base. Further-more interfaces for secure and fast online access to the data base shall be developed and implemented. The design of the hybrid data base will allow the storage, processing and analysis of spatial and relational data together. A relational data base containing spatio-tem-poral information that will be used during the entire span of the research can be applied afterwards for operational pollution management by the end users.

This catchment has been recently exposed to three main meteorological extreme events, resulting in the activation of multiple fast landslides, which occurred on the 1st October 2009, 10th March 2010 and 1st March 2011. Differently from the 2009 event, which only marginally hit the catchment, the 2010 and 2011 storms fully involved the area of the Mili catchment. Detailed field data was collected to associate the thickness of mobilised materials at the triggering zone to each mass movement within the catchment. This information has been used to model the landslide susceptibility for two classes of processes clustered into shallow failures for maximum depths of 0.5m and deep ones in case of values equal or greater than 0.5m. As the authors believed that the pe...

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) has gained importance ... more The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) has gained importance for lithological mapping over the last decade. Its suitability for creating a lithological map of Dahab basin in south eastern Sinai in Egypt is studied and presented in this paper. For classification and discrimination of different rock types spectral features, in particular band ratios, are used. A new band ratio stacking with afalse color composite created by the ratio stack image (8/5, 4/8, 11/14)is proposed for differentiation between younger granitoids and older granitoids in the southern and central part of the study area. Band ratios 7/6 and 6/4 have turned out to be very suitable for discriminating between Cambrian rocks and Upper Cretaceous rocks in the northern part of study area. Field investigations at different locations of the study area have been carried out to aid in the interpretation and analysis of the ratio stack images. The topographic and cli- matic characteristics of the pre-Alps study area are a particular challenge for the electric car fleet. To be able to assess to what extent the results of many research questions and measurements obtained in the Allgäu can be transferred to other re- gions. Therefore it was important to evaluate the efficiency of the existing car- network infrastructure. A broad range of over 30 metric and topo-geometric indices were calculated, such as the newly developed Topo-Index describing the topographic intensity affecting the transport network. Other established indices are for example the Route Directness Index, the Alpha- and Bravo- index describing the accessibility and connectivity of the region. It was necessary to identify indices with redundant information content in order to put together an effective set of indicators for the tra...

Paleoenvironmental Research in the Semiarid Lake Manyara Area, Northern Tanzania: A Synopsis

The Lake Manyara area is the focus of several paleo-archeological investigations. The Manyara bas... more The Lake Manyara area is the focus of several paleo-archeological investigations. The Manyara basin is located approximately 70 km east of Olduvai Gorge, where important paleoanthropological artifacts are traced back to Homo habilis. In the Manyara basin itself, two hominin-bearing sites (0.78–0.633 Ma) and plenty of vertebrate bones and teeth as well as stone artifacts from different periods were discovered, especially close to the Makuyuni River. Different methodological approaches with a main emphasis on remote sensing were utilized to contribute to the understanding of the paleo-landscape development. In order to investigate the morphotectonic evolution of the study area, lineaments were detected from Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite scenes. The complex lacustrine development of the Lake Manyara and its paleo-stages was investigated by delineating the extent of paleo-lake sediments (older than 0.633 Ma) with multispectral ASTER data. In addition, lake terraces and shorelines on different levels (up to 80 m above today’s lake level) and an outlet to the neighboring Engaruka basin were detected by analyzing the backscattered intensity of TerraSAR-X data. The distribution of topsoils, identified from multisensory remote sensing datasets, indicates soil formation as well as erosional and depositional processes. The fossils and artifacts were then characterized, and their distribution probabilities were determined using a statistical model. The proposed methods contribute to a better understanding of the paleoenvironmental interrelations within the study area.
