The different phases of the post-World War II building period during the GDR rule is evident in D... more The different phases of the post-World War II building period during the GDR rule is evident in Dresden as embodiment to the changes in urban planning policies and products of their time. In the last two decades of the regime, while the Housing Building Program and the revival of cultural building heritage occurred in tandem, plattenbau residences were also built within the city centre to accommodate the population. Ideas of pedestrian zones within the historic city centre as well as the peak of consumerism also defined urban planning in the 1970s. This article relates the pedestrian experience through the Street of Liberation (Straße der Befreiung) and discusses the ideas behind its conception and its place in the historical urban narrative.
