We trace the category back to its critical and theoretical origins, examining the three 'waves' that have configured it over the last four decades. We investigate how metadiscourse has evolved and the reasons why it continues fascinating researchers in professional and academic fields in a variety of disciplines and domains. We then focus on the fact that, as communication moves online and a variety of genres become digitalised, researchers active in metadiscourse are increasingly concerned with digital communication and are accordingly questioning (or adapting) well-established methodologies, but also proposing new and much-needed perspectives on reflexivity. The field is undoubtedly in a flux and new and interesting approaches and eclectic frameworks are emerging, which merit consideration.

The studies included in the volume draw on data collected from different contexts of digital communication, offering new perspectives on the role of metadiscourse in building and maintaining interaction between individuals and within different communities. Importantly, the studies included here are not restricted to academic and professional domains, as several authors explore new research avenues, such as communication on social media platforms."

Continuing a cross-disciplinary research on the academic poster genre (D’Angelo 2016), I seek here to highlight significant differences regarding word count, the layout of posters, as well as discipline-specific patterns concerning the use of textual interactive and interactional metadiscourse resources and visual interactive resources. The framework of analysis, drawn in part from Kress (2010) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2001, 2002, 2006) visual analyses, will be applied to academic posters produced within the disciplines of Applied Linguistics, Medicine, Ec...

Such corpus is part of a more general project funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and coordinated by the University of Bergamo and is meant to facilitate the investigation of identity traits typical of different branches of English specialised discourse. More specifically, the study seeks to investigate to what extent the cultural allegiance of (native or non-native) Anglophone discourse communities to their (linguistic, professional, social, national) reference group is affected by the use of English as a lingua franca of international communication. This chapter will concentrate on the criteria followed in the construction of such a specialised digital corpus and will discuss some critical aspects pertaining to the corpus design, the collection and classification of texts according to their genre, the gathering of ethnographic data on the...

The concept of ‘community’ is particularly useful to account for how genres are produced, received and responded to by individuals acting as members of social groups. The present paper reports on a preliminary analysis of the main textual and visual elements of conference posters in different disciplines. In particular, it describes which communicative strategies are favoured, which are allowed and, finally, which should be known to aspiring authors seeking admission to the academic community. For this purpose, a corpus of 60 posters belonging to the disciplines of Psychology, Law and Physics was assembled and investigated both textually and visually, applying an analytical framework (D’Angelo 2010b) based on Hyland’s (2000) approach to metadiscourse and Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1998, 2001) analysis of visual content in the media.

More sophisticated how-to tips and techniques are also available, along with discussions on how to use posters for professional development in the workplace or as a teaching and evaluation device within university courses. In particular, researchers have investigated journal articles, abstracts, dissertations, and conference proposals; other genres, such as conference poster presentations, have instead received little if any attention. The aim of the present paper is to suggest an analytical framework capable of highlighting the communicative purposes, reader-oriented strategies, and visual-linguistic interaction employed in the multimodal genre of academic posters. Borrowing from Hyland’s (2000) theoretical approach to metadiscourse interpretation and from Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1998, 2001) visual analyses, a new framework is suggested and exemplified using an academic poster recently presented at an international conference of applied linguistics.

Because of the differences in age and intellectual progress of young adult readers, a broad range of literary products have been considered and a short introduction to the history as well as the characteristics of YAL is provided in the first part of the book. In the second part, through an analysis of 3 case studies, a number of issues and challenges commonly encountered while translating YAL novels are addressed. The focus is on the translation of dialects and slangs, the translation of fantasy names and finally, the many issues encountered in the translation of Cultural Specific Items.

The advent of computer technologies, and of Internet in particular, has promoted procedures to resolve disputes totally, or partly, online. This new phenomenon is known under the acronym of ‘ODR’ (online dispute resolution). In particular, ODR instruments have proved to respond positively to the needs of medium-small disputes, such as those in B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to consumer) transactions over the Internet. Besides being the easiest and most innovative way of resolving problems deriving from transactions generated on the World Wide Web, ODR is also becoming popular in the resolution of off-line disputes. The reason is that the online dispute resolution service is simple and easy to carry out as it allows users to cancel time and space barriers, offering them the possibility to communicate easily.

As the academic poster is a multimodal genre, different modal aspects have been taken into consideration when analysing it, a fact that has somehow complicated the genre analysis conducted, but has also stimulated the research work involved and, in the end, provided interesting results. The analysis carried out here has highlighted significant cross-disciplinary differences in terms of word count, portrait/landscape orientation and layout of posters, as well as discipline and subdiscipline-specific patterns for what concerns the use of textual interactive and interactional metadiscourse resources and visual interactive resources. The investigation has revealed what textual and visual metadiscourse resources are employed, where and why, and as a consequence, what textual and visual metadiscourse strategies should be adopted by poster authors depending on the practices and expectations of their academic community.
