Biologico, naturale, ecologico: il must per i materiali da costruzione di successo sembra essere ... more Biologico, naturale, ecologico: il must per i materiali da costruzione di successo sembra essere il ritorno alla semplicit\ue0 delle origini, nonostante un\u2019offerta sempre pi\uf9 massiccia di ogni tipo di semilavorato e componente prodotto industrialmente e fornito a pi\ue8 d\u2019opera pronto per l'uso. E nonostante un processo di rapida evoluzione dei materiali che un tempo chiamavamo \u201cprimari\u201d e che oggi tali non sono pi\uf9, essendo invece a loro volta diventati prodotti industriali, intensamente elaborati, manipolati, trasformati, additivati prima di arrivare in cantiere. Ci\uf2 evidenzia una distanza crescente, dunque, un percorso sempre pi\uf9 lungo e complesso allontana la ruvida essenzialit\ue0 della materia prima dal manufatto che la incorporer\ue0 per farla diventare edificio. Malgrado molti luoghi comuni a sostegno del contrario, la sfida ambientale impone di intensificare la ricerca di nuovi materiali e di esplorarne le prestazioni tecniche, insieme alle molte inedite potenzialit\ue0 espressive. Con la c.d "Legge Obiettivo" (L.443/2001) l'Italia ha interpretato in modo original... more Con la c.d "Legge Obiettivo" (L.443/2001) l'Italia ha interpretato in modo originale -e probabilmente scorretto- il "terzo tipo" di appalto pubblico preivisto dalle Direttive CE, introducendo nell'ordinamento la figura del "contraente generale" impropriamente tradotta con l'espressione inglese "general contractor".Studiando il primo caso in cui la nuova disciplina \ue8 stata applicata, se ne evidenzia la mancanza di chiarezza nella attribuzione dei compiti e nella ripartizione del rischio fra i diversi operatori rispetto alle migliori pratiche adottate in altri contesti europei. Dopo una breve analisi delle possibili alternative, gli Autori formulano una proposta per il miglioramento del modello italiano che, in accordo con le direttive europee, lo renda meglio coerente con i principi del ppp (partenariato pubblico-privato) a cui la disciplina del \u201ccontraente generale\u201d deve essere correttamente riferita

Increasing attention is being paid to the thermal comfort of open spaces by both designers and researchers. Nature-based solutions and man-made devices to improve the comfort of outdoor spaces during summer are spreading, but effective, easy simulation and design support tools for this purpose are still lacking, as most of the available software such as ENVI-met or RayMan cannot model such devices. As Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) is one of the most relevant and comprehensive indicators of Outdoor Thermal Comfort (OTC), this study aims to investigate PET variations of different artificial shading systems and propose a simplified methodology for assessing them through analytical simulations with RayMan software. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified a crisis that has already been underway for at least a decade... more The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified a crisis that has already been underway for at least a decade: to stimulate recovery, the EU has put in place an impressive package of measures, the implementation of which is largely left to the national authorities. This would require a systematic reading of the territory, which in Italy clashes with the chronic lack of effective paths to interconnect the political levels to the decision-making processes at different scales. This article presents a method for mapping the relationships between the main environmental challenges and the response (individual and collective) that the community, if enabled, is able to offer in terms of adapting its behaviour. The method consists of a matrix of relationships between environmental priorities and behavioural models.

Italian social housing stock is characterized by low performances. It consumes high energy and it... more Italian social housing stock is characterized by low performances. It consumes high energy and it does not offer suitable levels of comfort, and requires flexible methods of approach to define objectives and modalities of intervention. This paper presents a case study located in Bologna (IT). The refurbishment of this building provides different intervention strategies.The financial analysis has been developed using the discounted cash flow approach in order to compare the different hypothesis. This approach al-lows to discount the cost of investment and future inflows and outflows to obtain the net present value, the internal rate of return and the discounted payback period. The different indicators are considered in order to verify if the different interventions on the building, in comparison with the current situation, are interesting from an economical point of view. This approach provides the decision makers with a degree of understanding about the economical outcomes

This book provides a coherent and realistic vision of the implications of the energy issue in the... more This book provides a coherent and realistic vision of the implications of the energy issue in the future development of our cities. It places emphasis on the links between very specific and technical topics and the most challenging issues concerning energy savings and the transition to a low carbon society. A great part of the built environment in most European cities consists of buildings dating from the 60s to early 90s, for residential purposes: this stock clearly presents several problems related to its functional layout, as well as its energy/thermal behaviour. Applying sustainable and energy savings principles to retrofitting interventions on the existing stock is one of the most urgent challenges to be met in the very near future. Giving some examples and case studies, this book investigates retrofitting interventions in terms of energy balance: from design strategies to choice of materials and components; from market trends analysis to economical assessment; and from the targeted energy performance to the energy investments needed for achieving it. The reader will benefit from the real life experiences and related results described in this book and acquire the tools for a constructive evaluation of the different options available to him/her, when faced with retrofitting interventions, thanks to a global view of all the issues involved

Starting with the first founded university, higher education has been evolving continuously, yet... more Starting with the first founded university, higher education has been evolving continuously, yet the pace of this evolution is not as fast as the changes that we observe in practice. Today, this discrepancy is not only limited to the content of the curricula but also the expected skills and competencies. It is evident that 21st-century skills and competencies should be much different than the ones delivered in the 20th-century due to rapidly developing and spreading new design and information technologies. Each and every discipline has been in continuous search of thè`right'' way of formalization of education both content and skill wise. This paper focuses on architectural design education incorporating discussions on the role of STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The study presents the outcomes of the ArchiSTEAM project, which is funded by EU Erasmus+ Programme, with the aim of re-positioning STEAM in architectural design education by contemplating 21st-century skills (a.k.a. survival skills) of architects. Three educational modules together with the andragogic approaches, learning objectives, contents, learning/teaching activities and assessment methods determined with respect to the skill sets defined for 21st-century architects.
