In particular, I analyse a public Health Care social service addressed to youth – Bologna’s Spazio Giovani – and a specific sex education project, whose development and trial I actively engaged during a three-years- long action-research, named W l’amore. Presenting my experience within the social dynamics among the stakeholders involved in this project’s trial – between Italy and the Netherlands - I reflect on the ways youth’s sexuality is handled by public policies and practices in Italy, and how anthropology can play an active role in highlighting socio-political implications of sex education. Anthropology, both as a deconstructive and constructive knowledge, can provide critical and more operative suggestions in the field of teenage sexual health promotion. Doing public anthropology, then, means not only to stress sex education’s socio-political implications, its contradictions and potentials, but also to trial anthropological skills within this field. It also means to engage the public debate regarding the discipline’s future inside and outside University. Applying anthropology to sex education for teenagers can contribute to the development and implementation of more equal poli- cies and practices promoting everybody’s sexual health.

That’s a group of practices which bind together physical pain and sexual pleasure. It is a specific way to intend eroticism and to experience bodies and sexualities and it is also part of a deeper personal and social identity construction and development. Identities are moving processes which come true through practices, also sexual ones. In this specific case, eroticism can be connected to pain or intense body stimulation during BDSM rituals. Generally, in contemporary society and its mainstream representations, pain and pleasure are antithetical. There are sexual researches and rituals which are deeply involved in pain experimentation, instead. A slap, during a negotiated sexual play, can be fundamental for a meaningful relation between subjectivities and it can also be part of the way a singular person gets in touch with the world within him/herself and the world of meanings and symbols the contest is made of. Playing BDSM is a form of personal and negotiated agency produced by an embodiment of representations and meanings which can be reconsidered and lived in a intimate human exchange. Pain doesn’t have to be overcome, it can be expressed through bodies which are object of choices and plural options. Pain can be understood, manageable and lived. Consensual sado-masochism plays with and calls into question the rational way to intend pain. Does it always have to be sedated when it is not necessary and useful ? Can physical pain during a sex play be useful to understand the potential of personal and socialized agency ? Whiplashes, hot wax dripping, bodies tied in uncomfortable but charming positions, are ways to embody specific contextual influences but also ways to produce meanings and to act on and through bodies living in the world.

The research is made through direct observation and participation to the activities of Spazio Giovani. It is a family planning clinic, part of the Public Health System, specifically addressed to teenagers and their needs related to contraception and STDs prevention. A particular project, called “W l’amore” is described and argued. It is inspired by a Dutch program and takes place through a cooperation between the school system and Spazio Giovani. An anthropological action-research, focusing on social and Public Health services, reveals how sexualities are conceptualized, handled and educated. Sexual education for teenagers cues to discuss themes connected to sexual citizenship and empowerment. It should lead to share knowledge and practices concerning sex, gender, health and desires respecting identities and contributing to create a more inclusive society.
