Variations in sex ratios at birth is still an active research field and several studies focus on this topic. Early works stated that the human sex ratio at birth was universally stable, without significant fluctuations across time and space. However, in the last decades various authors directly challenged these conclusions. After reviewing these studies on the historical trends of the sex ratio at birth, long term tendencies in Italy are analyzed. We collect historical and contemporary series of sex ratios at birth, covering more the 160 years, and compare them with those of different European countries. In this work, studies on the main determinant of long- and short-term trends are briefly reviewed, taking into account findings and results from different kinds of disciplines. The variations in the sex ratio at birth mentioned in the literature are asses...

In this article, studies on the main determinant of long- and short-term trends are briefly reviewed, taking into account findings and results from different kinds of disciplines. In his early studies, Corrado Gini concluded that the human sex ratio at birth was universally stable, without significant fluctuations across time and space. However, in the last decades several authors have directly challenged these conclusions. Therefore, after summarizing the results of Gini’s research on the historical trends of the sex ratio at birth, a brief review focuses on the analyses of contemporary trends. The main determinants of the variations of the sex ratio at birth in time and space mentioned in the literature and the corresponding theoretical explanations are summarized. Special attention is paid to the recent studies on the impact of the environment, p...

Some studies on this topic highlight the presence of unmet reproductive health needs of adolescent in different regions. Improving maternal health has been established as a key development priority among the Millennium Development Goals, and upgrading reproductive and maternal health is usually associated with the eradication of inequality and poverty and with the presence of health care programs and services devoted to girls’ education. We attempt to investigate the geographical and socioeconomic determinants of both teenage pregnancies and maternal health behaviours among adolescent women in Kenya. We ascertain the influence of the availability of health care facilities mainly oriented to the specific needs of reproductive health. Main data are represented by 2003 Kenyan Demographic and Health Survey. In addition, the DHS data set collects Global Positioning System locators for each of the primary...

150 years of official population statistics in Italy

A crucial point is the role played by institutional organisations and their specific choices in terms of the production of official statistics. The analysis is divided into five different historical periods: from Italian unification to the First World War; the period between the two wars, from World War II to the Sixties; the Seventies; and the last thirty years. In the first decades after unification, the institutional structure led to the enhancement of “political arithmetic” as a tool for the administration of the new state. This perspective was strengthened between the two World Wars, the period of Fascism. After World War II, the availability of institutional data focused mainly on economic dynamics. The subsequent major transformations in the field of family and fertility behaviour pushed for further developments in population studies. Starting in the Seventies, methodological and scientific progress led to a rethinking of the creation of data. Following the line traced by the paradigm shift (from macro to micro), a new phase of data collection started with the implementation of national socio-demographic sample surveys. In the last 30 years, behavioural changes have been further accelerated. However, at the same time, advances in scientific research have led to new explanatory approaches and data collection methods. The Longevity Pattern in Emilia Romagna, Italy: A Spatio-temporal Analysis

Spatio-temporal modeling is used to tackle at both periods the random variations in the occurrence of long-lived individuals, due to the rareness of such events in small areas. This method allows to exploit the spatial proximity smoothing the observed data, as well as to control for the effects of a set of regressors. As a result, clusters of areas characterized by extreme indexes of longevity are well identified and the temporal evolution of the phenomenon can be depicted. A joint analysis of male and female longevity by cohort in the two periods is conducted specifying a set of hierarchical Bayesian models.

Thus does it confirm the importance of breast-feeding in determining birth spacing. Women living in complex sharecropping households experienced a significantly higher risk of childbirth than did women in families headed by daily wage earners. In addition, the reproductive behavior of sharecroppers seemed to be substantially invariant to short-term fluctuations in prices, whereas the laborers' group experienced a negative price effect. Both descriptive and multivariate analyses indicate a slight and gradual decrease in fertility levels during the period in question.
