The transition from hard-copy to digital materials is one of the most significant changes in the last decades, both in terms of classroom practice and in terms of policy-making, since both new teaching skills and approaches are called for in order to use the new media in a sensitive and relevant way. The aim of the documentary research was to identify international experiences in the field, pinpoint the rationale, and compare it with approaches to this type of change that are present in Romania. The study-case is devoted to History as school subject. This subject is both well suited to adopt the new teaching media, is present in non-scholastic digital media, and is one of the foci of interest for the public opinion. The approach is twofold. The starting point is a documentary analysis of the agenda set forth by policy-makers (in terms of aims, objectives, and measures proposed or already implemented). The second step is the analysis of viewpoint expressed by practitioners. A number of History teachers have answered a questionnaire (based on Likert scale items) concerning their perspectives on the digital textbooks for their subject. A focus group selected from the initial group has analyzed the results of the questionnaire in order to fine-tune the analysis. Initial results seem to indicate that the appearance of digital textbooks is a change that asks for a process-based approach to educational change. To put it shortly, the issue of the digital textbooks will have to focus on the option between narrative-based and the task-based approaches to History teaching.

While both fields share the same broad area of interest, the assumed scope and methodological stanzas have created different interpretations of the past-as-record. Questioning traditional viewpoints, it is inferred that the differences can be played to the advantage of both fields. To use a metaphor, while the first deals with the show of human society, the later deals with the stage and the props, and it takes both to make a relevant performance.

The target population chosen is represented by the first-year History students at the University of Bucharest, and a group of MA students from various study strands as a comparative cohort. The instrument applied was Kolb's Learning Styles Questionnaire. The primary results seem to indicate certain uniformity in learning styles, but some significant differences are also visible. At the same time the implications for the academic History curriculum are debated.

The paper presents the way in which a specific topic is developing over a decade in the framework of three consecutive projects, with an increase in project partners, the negotiating of findings and the search for a common ground, and the educational structures in Europe change. They give a long-term perspective over changes that occur at the level of initial teacher training, and its relation to broader changes in educational policies and systems of schooling.

Research paper thumbnail of Relevance Of Training Profiles For High Schools In Relation To Student Motivation

The paper explores the answer formulated by Romanian High School students to a questionnaire aime... more The paper explores the answer formulated by Romanian High School students to a questionnaire aimed at measuring the interest in studying History. The instrument was developed within the framework of a European research, coordinated by the Groningen University and which includes five countries. We analyzed the answers of the Romanian students starting from the working hypothesis that a potential corelation between the answers and the training profile of the specific High School in which they learn (in our case, theoretical and vocational) can be identified. Starting from the initial research instrument, students' answers were organized in eight categories within three clusters, organized around their perception of the utility and interest of studying History for their professional life, for general learning, and for their personal development. In more technical terms, three testlets were developed in order to better pinpoint their attitudes towards History as a subject. The comparative analysis is useful in the context of the debate concerning the training profiles provided by High Schools (as specific stage in their compulsory education), and over the ways in which the History curriculum might be better developed. The null hypothesis, that is, there are no significant differences within the target group, will enable a debate concerning the relevance of training profiles for High Schools in relation to student motivation.
