Stratification is a common phenomenon in nature and culture. Homogeneity is always only partial or something perceived from a certain point of view. Real things consist of different elements and different subsystems. This holds for the most abstract human creation like language or music down to the subatomic world. However, in many cases analysis is possible only if we suppose homogeneity or stipulate the ceteris paribus condition. Advance in research means in many cases the stepwise relaxing of the homogeneity condition and admitting further variables.

In order to test the validity of Zipf's law we analysed a corpus composed of the End of Year addresses delivered by ten presidents of the Italian Republic in the period 1949–2008. The results show that Zipf's law is

Though many linguists are still engaged in describing, collecting and locating isolated language phenomena, typology can nowadays be seen as the study of ...

Functions based on interaction of forces, tests for significance of a property and for comparison of two texts are introduced. The methods are applied to the poetry of the Slovak poetess Eva Bachletová.

As no single formula could be found so far which would be able to sufficiently fit to all data more and more variants (modifications, ad-hoc formulas, derivations etc.) are created, each of which agrees quite well with some given data sets but fail with others. The present paper proposes a new approach to the problem, based on the assumption that every data set which displays a Zipf-like structure is composed of several system components. A corresponding model is presented and tested on data from 100 texts from 20 languages.

Specifically, a geometric characterization of the rank-frequency sequence, which is determined by relationships among the highest word frequency, a number of particular word forms in a text, and the so-called h-point, is analysed. We observe that the geometric characterization of the rank-frequency sequence correlates strongly with the other frequency-based text property called the golden section of text which seems to be a result of a universal mechanism controlling one's language usage. These findings can be viewed as a result of self-organization of text.
