La riappropriazione simbolica della città: Beirut, Sarajevo e dintorni, 2019

of post-war societies of Beirut and Sarajevo express their identity and their belonging to
a specific ethnic community. Moreover it attempts to measure to which extent ethnic
symbols mark a dividing line between the groups and affect their mobility accross the
urban area and the whole national territory. After the wars ended in Beirut (1975-1991)
and Sarajevo (1992-1996), the demographic distribution reached extreme levels of
segragationism, creating “pure” muslim and christian neighbourhoods and districts,
leading to the creation of deeply divided societies along ethnic lines. Separation was
further strenghtened by the adoption (in the case of Sarajevo) or reinforcement (in the
case of Beirut) of the political system now in use in both countries, known as
consociational democracy.
The research consists of four chapters: the first one analyzes the concept of civil war
and the ideological implications hiding behind it, the reasons that lead to the occurence
of such event and the context in which it is likely to take place.
The second chapter depicts the historical context of the wars in Lebanon and Bosnia.
In the third chapter an attempt is made to map the demographic distribution of the
religious communities before the wars.
The four and last chapter analyzes the resolutions of the conflicts adopted by the
International Community and their consequences at a political and social level. It then
illustrates the ways through which citizens of both countries represent themselves as
part of a community, and how religious and ethnic symbols trace a geographic tangible
border that affects every member of society in his\her daily life.
