Research paper thumbnail of Can nonexistent mathematical objects make a difference? Meinongianism, indispensability argument and mathematical entanglement

Philosophical Inquiries, 2024

Central to this argument is the Quinean ontic thesis that we are committed to the existence of all the entities we (indispensably) quantify over in our best scientific theories. But what if a different metaontological paradigm is adopted? In this paper, I propose a Meinongian interpretation of the indispensability argument. The new reading of the indispensability argument, in accordance with heavy duty platonism, allows me to introduce a new notion of metaphysical dependence that goes by the name of mathematical entanglement, and to conclude that nonexistent mathematical objects make a difference to the concrete, physical world.

The advantage of using a four-valued epistemic logic is that it allows us to reason with partial, incomplete or even incoherent information. This is especially the case in the information sciences, which have to deal with an extremely varied quantity and quality of data. The application of logic to metadata extraction provides a powerful and rigorous tool capable of assessing the quality of the extracted information; that is, establishing the correctness of the extracted information.

However, there has been little discussion of the relationship between Meinongianism and the indispensability argument. According to strong Meinongianism: i) some objects do not exist; ii) we can refer to and quantify over nonexistent objects to make true statements about them; and iii) nonexistent objects are the truthmakers of sentences which contain reference to or/and quantification over nonexistent objects. In this paper, against the mainstream Quinean meta-ontology, I argue that there are nonexistent mathematical objects as truthmakers and that nonexistent mathematical objects make a difference for the way the concrete world is.

The main goal of this paper is to build a first-order logic (FOL)-based applied ontology for metadata extraction, by the name MADME (MAke Decision for Metadata Extraction). The MADME procedure with its mathematical logic ontology is able to determine the best metadata extraction systems from heterogeneous digital mathematical documents, and to support the research community in MKM.

Data veracity describes a closeness to truth on a higher level than a measure such as accuracy does. High veracity data is data that can be relied upon when making decisions, thus reducing the risk of basing choices on untrue information. The article uses epistemic logic to model structured metadata automatically extracted from legal papers, and the tools of metaontology to propose a definition of veracity as truthmaker.

revisionist attitude towards the grammatical form of the sentences of our
language. In logical-semantic terms the standard view is based on two theses: i) existence is not a first level property instantiated by individuals; ii) existence is expressed by means of the existential quantifier ∃. Quine’s
criterion of ontological commitment not only has the merit of being a strategy to make explicit the ontological commitments of a theory, but it also plays a fundamental role in the debate on the existence of mathematical objects. In fact, the criterion is generally adopted when formulating the indispensability argument for mathematical platonism. In the philosophy of mathematics, platonism is the thesis according to which mathematical statements, and theorems of mathematical theories in particular, are about abstract objects forming a domain that those theorems describe. Through the consideration of themes in the philosophy of mathematics, metaontology and the philosophy
of language, the book aims at offering an analysis of the relationship between Quine’s quantificational theory of existence and the indispensability argument.
