Business processes across enterprises can function in an integrated manner with the help of business integration servers that broker information across multiple loosely-coupled applications. A business integration server maintains workflow process definitions and routes business documents via a messaging infrastructure. In this scenario, the portal works as a workflow client handling messages as they arrive and supporting process managers. This paper describes a portal prototype implementation that is supported by an open service platform and by a framework that extend the portal capabilities with metadata and workflow management.

To control the coordination of trading partners a coordination mechanism is presented based on an event-oriented workflow engine. This work intends to give some support to the idea that the workflow technology can be suitable for this type of application. A possible case of an application is illustrated. To describe this business process basic constructs of a process definition language were proposed. The paper ends with some considerations about the implementation of the coordinating workflow engine, and about the distribution in the Internet of the infrastructure used on the implementation.

Aiming at these environments, where services may be offered in an open manner, this workpresents some results in the development of the Multiware Platform. The design of this platform combines ideas from both the Rhf-ODP (Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing) and existent industrial specifications and products for distributed processing (e.g. ANSAware and CORBA). The platform offers functionalities to support and facilitate the development, use and management of multimedia cooperative applications.

Toolkits specially developed for constructing Intelligent Mobile Agents are not available yet. This lack keeps mobile agent developers restricted to the procedural approach of writing software. This paper presents the development of a flexible and extensible Intelligence Framework that aims to overcoming this limitation. The implementation of a rule-based forward-chaining inference engine in agreement with the suggested framework is also discussed. This situation justifies the need for an approach that can capture business changes and quickly implement them into computational systems. Considering that some business logic portions are quite volatile and susceptible to changes and other portions are quite stable and less susceptible to changes, a model for flexible service integration using business rules and service ontology is proposed. The volatile portions are externalized as business rules and the stable portions as Web services. This paper presents the main concepts of the model and an overview of the proposal proof of concept.

In this context, this paper proposes a model that can capture business changes and quickly implement them into computational systems. The model includes an approach for fast development of services considering that the volatile portions of business logic can be externalized as business rules and the stable portions as Web Services. It is presented a business rules and ontology integrated development environment (IDE) as part of this model, where business rules' facts and conditions are linked to Web services.

Correcting for these effects can be critical owing to statistical disturbances and limited a priori information. A recursive algorithm has been produced from the Bayes estimation theory. Computational aspects are discussed in different simulated examples.

The paper identifies a set of infrastructures and services that can be provided by grid computing platforms which are fundamental for distributed e-democracy applications. A scenario of an e-Democracy application in the field of policy formulation is described and some details of an ongoing implementation are discussed.
