Tobiah’s journey recalls Homer’s Odyssey, the suffering of the righteous brings to mind the legend of Job, and the narrative around a disgraced and then rehabilitated official evokes the story of Aḥiqar. The author of Tobit seeks to exploit his readers’ knowledge of these stories in order to convey his message more effectively: he encourages them to trust in divine providence that intervenes on behalf of the faithful.
This volume, based on essays previously published in Italian, collected and translated into English, and some still unedited, written directly in English for this book, charts Tobit’s narrative sources through comparative literary analysis, firmly placing the story in the genre of the didactic and edifying religious novel.

In fact, variants of the Lucianic manuscripts, if confirmed by the VL and Josephus, can attest the protolucianic, textual form that reflects closely the Old Greek, and is therefore very close to the original text. Literary criticism then allows you to also study the nature of theological reading of the Deuteronomistic editors, who produced an ideologized historiography, which should therefore be checked carefully.

On this literary form, the character of his wife might therefore have been placed in the story of Job. The Old Greek attests clearly that by its addition (v. 9a-e), the intervention of Job’s wife was defined more favorably, and making her a kind of anti-heroine, on the dramatic scheme of the antagonism of Ismene and Chrysothemis against their respective hero.

That of Hannah is the defiance of a lively faith, attentive to people and to the situations of life, more that in complying with the law, in the rites and works of justice. This was the primitive sense of her words; in fact, the author of Tobit constructed her portrait on the original archetype of Job’s wife, that can be seen in Old Greek (OG) and in his addiction in v. 9a–e, by contaminating them.
A reworking of Hannah’s image is totally positive in vv. 11–13: there it’s reinterpreted in the light of the new portrait of Job’s wife, reworked with misogynist accents by Jewish tradition and incorporated in the MT and in the ecclesiastical Greek of the LXX, where her words, rather than an exhortation, they are a curse against Yhwh, responsible for Job’s suffering.

In particular, the activity of the Soncino stands out, a Jewish family from the Rhineland who, after moving to Italy, in Soncino (CR), opened a printing shop, and on 22 April 1488 published the first complete edition of the Bible. This first was followed by three other editions of the Soncino, printed in the various cities to which they gradually transferred their activity, namely in Naples, Brescia and Pesaro. This study therefore presents the four editions of this Hebrew Bible, usually named with the surname assumed by these printers from the toponym in which they originally settled.

The Brescia period (1491-97) of its typographical activity stands between the beginnings in Soncino (1488-90) and the failed attempt to settle in Venice (1498-1502). In Brescia (1491-95) he published eight editions of biblical and secular texts, including the famous entire edition of the Hebrew Bible and the "Fable of the ancients" (Meshal ha-qadmoni); in Barco of Orzinuovi (1496-97) he printed three works, among which the Selichot.

To them we owe the first partial editions of the Bible (Psalter and Torah), and the first complete (Hebrew Bible Soncino). Two important specimens (one with nice miniatures) of the third edition of this Bible, work by Gershom Soncino (Brescia 1494), are kept in the civic Biblioteca Queriniana. This is the best complete edition of the Bible Soncino; its reduced size, in eighth, ensured a wide diffusion. This ‘pocket’ Bible was adopted by Luther for his translation of the AT into German (1522-34), conducted by texts written in the original languages.

According to the novelty of the methodological perspective of this work, we do not focus mainly on the most important testimonia textus, in view of the reconstruction of the original of each book, but rather we aim to examine all the known textual witnesses of each of the biblical books, paying therefore particular attention to the manuscript traditions, and considering specifically all the single linguistic traditions in which they come.
This article therefore presents: 1. Manuscripts and Editions - 2. Translation Character: The First Section (1:1-7:11); The Second Section (7:11 [1° brm]-14:15) - 3. Translation Technique and Inner-Translational Features - Text-Critical Value.

Therefore, it highlights the uses, the various recontextualizations and eventual re-semantizations that they underwent starting from the Classics up to assuming theological value in the biblical world. In particular, the occurrences of these three terms are analyzed in Greek literature, in papyri and inscriptions, in LXX, in Jewish literature of the Greek language, in the New Testament and in ancient Christian literature.

First of all, the Department's initiatives to introduce the figure and scientific work of great orientalists of Brescia origin, trained in the study of the Hebrew Bible, were presented: thanks to their library funds - and to that of Giovanni Garbini, recently received - it was possible set up the "Felice Montagnini" Library of historical-philological studies on the Bible, the "Francesco Vattioni" Archive of bibliographic and documentary sources of the ancient Near East, and the "Luigi Cagni" Seminar of Studies on Languages and Cultures of the Near East and Mediterranean. Then, three important editorial initiatives are illustrated: they have produced valuable tools for the philological study of the Hebrew Bible. This is the Soncino Bible published in Brescia (15th century), the Hebrew Scroll, found at the University of Brescia (13th century), and the first complete translation into Italian of the Greek Bible (20th century).

Exegete, commentator and translator, his interest in the Bible grew gradually in the field of Assyriology, aimed at the meticulous research of textual truth, through the comparativistic analysis with the Mesopotamians sources. In fact, clear analogies to the Biblical story of creation seem to indicate a contamination of Sumerian and Akkadian mythology. Cagni discusses the extra-Biblical origins of Israel’s prophecy, studying 52 Mari prophetic texts

Exegete, commentator and translator, his interest in the Bible grew gradually in the field of philology, aimed at the meticulous research of textual truth, through the reconstruction of the transmission of the biblical text. He thus effected the famous multilingual edition of Ecclesiasticus, and a study on the Book of Job in sight of a critical edition, while he devoted a special attention to the Book of Tobit, by studying its Latin textual tradition in Spanish via the collation of the manuscripts of the Vetus Latina (the Speculum, the first Bible of Alcalá, and the Bible of Roda)

It is dedicated to the memory of Luigi Cagni, an orientalist of Brescian origins and of international fame as an Assyriologist, who linked his name to the famous Neapolitan conferences with which studies on the Ebla language (Syria) began, attested by the finds found by the Mission Italian Archaeological (1975). The purpose of the seminar is to preserve the collections of the "Felice Montagnini" Library of historical-philological studies on the Bible, and of the "Francesco Vattioni" Archive of bibliographic and documentary sources, and to coordinate their research and study activities on the Bible in the context of literature of the ancient Near East.

The Brescia period (1491-97) of its typographical activity stands between the beginnings in Soncino (1488-90) and the failed attempt to settle in Venice (1498-1502). In Brescia (1491-95) he published eight editions of biblical and secular texts, including the famous entire edition of the Hebrew Bible and the "Fable of the ancients" (Meshal ha-qadmoni); in Barco of Orzinuovi (1496-97) three works, among which the Selichot.

XIV. This "pocket" Bible was adopted by Luther for his translation of the AT into German (1522-34), conducted by texts written in the original languages.
