The objective of this work was to test the effect of planting date and potato cultivars on the postharvest greening of tubers. The treatments consisted of three planting dates (October, December, and February) and three potato cultivars (Agata, BRS Clara, and BRS F63 Camila). It was observed that the tubers harvested in February were less susceptible to greening, probably due to the higher physiological maturity of the tubers produced in this planting date. Tubers of cv. BRS Clara had lower greening than the tubers of the other cultivars. In addition to the light conditions, the cultivar and storage air temperature are also important factors that affect greening rates. Care must be taken with these factors to avoid losses of tubers by greening.

The estimation of potato tuber damage is usually performed by assessing the external damage to the detriment of feeding tunnels caused by larvae. Thus, we propose a method to estimate the damage caused by D. speciosa larvae, considering the external and internal aspects of the tubers separately. For that, potato plants cv. Agata were grown under different infestations of larvae, measuring the area occupied by the holes and the volume of internal feeding tunnels, relating these data to the total area and volume of the tuber. The methodology used allowed us to characterize an increase in damage in tubers with the highest infestation of larvae. The correlation between internal and external damage caused by D. speciosa larvae was not significant, indicating that external damage alone is not an adequate parameter for the di...

Research paper thumbnail of Seeding rates in late sowing affect soybean yield in Southern Brazil

Research, Society and Development

Soybean seeding rate (SR) is commonly subject to genotype x environment interactions, and charact... more Soybean seeding rate (SR) is commonly subject to genotype x environment interactions, and characterization of this interaction is necessary to improve yield potential of future cultivars, especially in late sowing. The objectives of this study were to evaluate yield and yield components of three soybean cultivars in different SR under late sowing in Southern Brazil. We observed an interaction between SR and cultivars under late sowing, in which the increase from 25 to 45 seeds m-2 increased yield by 12% and 23% for cultivars BMX Energia and TMG 7262, respectively, while for cultivar AFS 110 there was no SR effect. The cultivars used in this study can be classified from more to less responsive to SR in late sowing as follows: TMG 7262 > BMX Energia > AFS 110. Also, the cultivars used in this study can be classified from higher to lower yield potential in late sowing as follows: TMG 7262 > AFS 110 > BMX Energia. The yield components most correlated to yield were as follows...

Research paper thumbnail of Growth and yield of black bean cultivar after successive monocultivation

Research, Society and Development

Grain yield of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is affected by biotic and abiotic conditions, as well... more Grain yield of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is affected by biotic and abiotic conditions, as well as by farmers' management. In the Center-South region of Parana State, the successive cultivation of black bean cultivars is common. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and yield of six black bean cultivars after successive monocultivation. The experiment was conducted in the field with six black bean cultivars and four repetitions (blocks). The cultivar with the highest grain yield was BRS Esplendor, a cultivar with a high number of grains per area. IPR Tuiuiú had the second-best grain yield because of its high harvest index. The continuous monocultivation resulted in low grain yield because of the high incidence of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. Although common, the practice of continuous monocultivation of black bean cultivars in the Center-South region of Parana results in low grain yield and should be avoided.

The used cultivars were ‘Agata’, susceptible, and ‘BRS Ana’, moderately susceptible. The main treatment consisted in manually applying a 10cm-thick layer of fresh mulch when potato sprouts were emerging. Fresh mulch was prepared with plants available at that time of the year. For the spring experiments, fresh mulch was a mixture of oats, rye grass and wild radish (60 t/ha) and for the fall experiment, semi-ripe elephant grass (90 t/ha). Plots consisted of six 10m-long rows, spaced at 0.8m, containing 28 plants per row. Experimental design was in completely randomized blocks with four replicates. Natural inoculum was adopted. Percentage of leaf area was weekly estimated until the end of the plant cycle and the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was cal...

However, data found in the literature differ on the optimal consistency of the culture medium to be used in vitro. The aim in this research was to look at the adaptation of potato cultivars to medium with different agar concentrations. The experimental design was entirely randomized in a factorial scheme. The experiment tested the effect of 3 agar medium concentrations (solid, semisolid and liquid) on 6 cultivars (Agata, Bel, Camila, Catucha, Clara and Eliza), with 5 repetitions. We quantified from the plantlets, fresh and dry mass of roots and shoot, the number of nodes, the multiplication capacity and vigor. The study showed that potato cultivars respond significantly to different concentrations of agar and their best response was in the semisolid medium.

Research paper thumbnail of Poultry litter and fresh mulch of Elephant grass improve the organic potato production

Pesquisa Agropecuária Tropical

The organic production system for potato is usually limited by the occurrence of diseases and nut... more The organic production system for potato is usually limited by the occurrence of diseases and nutrient shortage. In these cases, fresh grass mulch and organic fertilization can interact in the foliar late blight infestation and increase the yield and quality of marketable potato tubers, in the organic production system. Aiming to validate this hypothesis, four poultry litter doses (0 Mg ha-1, 10 Mg ha-1, 20 Mg ha-1 and 30 Mg ha-1), which were incorporated into the soil at the pre-planting stage of organic grown potato combined with the presence and absence of fresh mulch (60 Mg ha-1) composed of chopped Elephant grass, were tested. The incorporation of poultry litter into the soil at the pre-planting of potato or the use of fresh grass mulch after the potato hilling inhibits the late blight infestation on leaves, in the organic system. The application of fresh grass mulch after the hilling operation enhances the effect of organic fertilization at the pre-planting of potatoes. The pr...

The treatments were three cultivars (Agata, BRS Clara and BRS F63 Camila) and three planting date (October, December and February), carried out in two crop years (2014/15 and 2015/16). Total and marketable yields, average mass of total and marketable tubers, growth period, leaf area index, number and dry weight of the tubers were evaluated. The first planting date resulted in higher yield than the third date. Cultivar BRS F63 Camila was the one with highest yield in this first planting date (47.4 t ha-1), due to greater number of tubers produced in relation to the other cultivars and to higher average tuber weight (166 g tuber-1) in relation to Agata (113 g tuber-1). In the second planting date, no difference in yield was observed among cultivars. In the third planting date, BRS Clara was the cultivar with highest yield (21.3 t ha-1), du...

This study aimed to determine the yield of new potato genotypes (cultivar BRS Camila and clone CL 02-05), as well as the cultivar Ágata, submitted to four NPK 4-14-8 fertilizer doses (0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1) in the crop seasons of 2013/14 and 2014/15. We evaluated the total and marketable tuber yield, total and marketable tuber number, percentage of marketable tuber dry weight, average marketable tuber weight and plant growth period. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split plot scheme, with fertilizer doses allocated as main plots and genotypes as subplots, with three replications. We did not observe significant interaction for any analyzed variable. The clone CL 02-05 showed higher total and marketable tuber yield compared to the other cultivars, mainly due to its higher production of tuber number. However, we observed a high...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of modern and old, European and Brazilian potato cultivars in different environments. Two experiments were carried in the field in 2013, in Brazil: in Guarapuava, in the state of Paraná, from January to April; and in Brasília, the Federal District, from August to November. Treatments consisted of six cultivars (origin, year of release): Bintje (European, 1910), Monalisa (European, 1982) and Agata (European, 1990); Baronesa (Brazilian, 1955), Catucha (Brazilian, 1995) and BRS Clara (Brazilian, 2010), arranged in complete blocks at random, with four replications, in both areas. Growth cycle, total and commercial yield (number of tubers and mass), tuber average weight and tuber dry matter content were evaluated. We observed significant differences in yield among cultivars, both in Guarapuav...
