Impaired myocardial function has been suggested as a primary disorder in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and differences in DT parameters have been reported to be distinguishable from other LVH causes. We evaluated DT differences for patients with LVH caused by hypertension and patients with HCM, assessing regional systolic and diastolic function. A total of 62 participants were studied: 21 with HCM; 22 with LVH secondary to hypertension; and 19 control subjects. DT was used to record mitral annulobasal segment motion in the longitudinal axis. Systolic and diastolic velocities were measured at lateral and septal sites, and well-known ratios were obtained for diastolic assessment. A new global function index (GFI) that evaluates both systole and diastole was also calculated (GFI = [Emi/E(DT)]/S(DT) [s x cm(-1)], where mi is mitral inflow, E is E wave, and S is systolic wave). Comparison showed significant differences in all parameters evaluated at the septal-basal segment and a GFI value of 1.77 showed 85% sensitivity and 75% specificity for detecting HCM when interventricular septum thickness was increased. In the presence of unexplained LVH, markedly decreased DT velocities at basal septum efficiently detect myocardial dysfunction at this segment, and a calculated GFI > 1.77 strongly supports the diagnosis of HCM.

The participants were 22 school children (10 boys, 12 girls) aged 8 -10 years (mean = 8.9, s = 0.7) in the third and fourth grades. Daily totals for the physical activity variables were calculated by summing the values for each hour of 14 h of physical activity measurements (08:00 to 22:00 h). Recess times (minutes) were as follows: morning 10:30 to 11:00 h and afternoon 15:30 to 16:00 h. We did not differences between boys and girls in daily total accelerometer counts or the overall time spent in MVPA. However, girls were significantly (P 5 0.05) more involved (38%) in MVPA during recess time than boys (31%). Participation in MVPA during recess contributes significantly more (P 5 0.05) for girls (19%) than boys (15%) to the total amount of physical activity suggested by international health-related physical activity guidelines, while the percentage of time engaged in MVPA during recess time at school accounts for a small amount of the daily MVPA (6% for boys and 8% for girls). The results of this study suggest that school recess time is an important setting to promote MVPA and contributes to daily physical activity in young children, especially in girls.

We studied the effectiveness of low-level laser (LLL) and light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation alone or in combination with AV in reducing local edema formation and hemorrhage induced by Bothrops moojeni venom (BmV) in mice. Edema formation was induced by injection of 1 μg per paw of BmV into the right paw and was evaluated before and at several intervals after BmV intraplantar injection. Hemorrhagic activity was evaluated after intradermal injection of 20 μg of BmV by measuring the diameter of the hemorrhagic area on the inner side of the skin. The site of BmV injection was irradiated by LLL or LED 30 min after BmV inoculation. AV was also administered intravenously 30 min after BmV injection. Irradiation with LLL at a wavelength of 685 nm and a dose of 2.2 J/cm2 and with a red LED and an infrared LED at wavelengths of 635 nm and 945 nm, respectively, and a dose of 4 J/cm2 reduced edema formation and hemorrhage induced by BmV (p < 0.05). The combined AV and LLL or LED treatment showed the same reduction as LLL or LED irradiation separately. In conclusion, both LLL and LED irradiation reduced venom-induced local effects even though symptoms were already present. Thus, the effect of phototherapy in reducing local effects induced by BmV may be clinically relevant.

The esophagus is divided into three parts, in order to study the penetration incidence, and the uppermost and the lowest show the greatest density of penetration, while in the middle portion only occasional fibers in small numbers are found. The specific characteristics observed in this type of fiber, such as their distribution along the wall of the esophagus, the levels reached by their endings within the mucous epithelium itself and this same epithelium considered as the specified destination of the endings, lead to the belief that they may be functionally regarded as structures of a sensory character.

In general, these requirements lead to the design and assembly of a specific test bench. In this work, an experimental set-up was specially designed to perform the electro-thermomechanical characterization of SMA wires. This apparatus was used to determine the strain-temperature (epsilon - T) and electrical resistance-temperature (R - T) hysteretic characteristics curves of a Ti-Ni shape memory wire (90 mm in length and 150 µm in diameter) under mechanical load. The SMA wire is loaded by means of constant weights and a controlled system for injection of electrical power allows performing the heating-cooling cycles. The obtained hysteretic epsilon - T and R - T characteristics curves for some levels of applied loads are used to determine important shape memory parameters, like martensitic transformation temperatures, temperature hysteresis, temperature slopes and shape memory effect under load. These parameters were in accord with the ones found in literature for the studied SMA wires.
