"Language and Grammar" examines categorial grammars and type-logical grammars, two linguistic theories that play a significant role in this area of study yet have been overshadowed until recently. The prominent scholars contributing to this volume also explore the impact of the Lambek program on linguistics and logical grammar, producing, ultimately, an exciting and important resource that demonstrates how type-logical grammars are promising future models of reasoning and computation.

This approach, recently suggested by Jim Lambek for French (Lambek, 2010), has the advantage of assigning more careful featural information to syntactic types, resulting particularly appropriate for the resolution of a number of critical questions concerning features assignment and agreement. In this paper we will focus on the Italian language paying particular attention to the featural properties connected to clitic attachment and clitic climbing.

Pregroups are non commutative structures, but the syntax of natural languages shows a diffuse presence of cyclic patterns exhibited in different kinds of word order changes. The need of cyclic operations or transformations was envisaged both by Z. Harris and N. Chomsky, in the framework of generative transformational grammar. In this paper we propose an extension of the calculus of pregroups by introducing appropriate cyclic rules that will allow the grammar to formally analyze and compute word order and movement phenomena in different languages such as Persian, French, Italian, Dutch and Hungarian. This cross-linguistic analysis, although necessarily limited and not at all exhaustive, will allow the reader to grasp the essentials of a pregroup grammar, with particular reference to its straightforward way of computing linguistic information.

In the paper particular emphasis is given to the logical representation of lexical information and of the principles of the X-bar theory.

Such a framework is appealing for linguistic analysis since it allows one to develop a dynamic characterization of the notion of a function, that plays a basic role in the foundations of categorial grammar. The analysis will focus on a variety of constructions involving scope configurations, unbounded dependencies and Wh-clauses. Particular attention is given to the proof nets for MNLL, that are planar graphs in which the communication processes and the flow of information are represented by means of a parallelistic architecture. We will introduce proof nets and sequent derivations associated to each linguistic expression and will show that a direct relationship exists between the types and derivations of the Syntactic Calculus and the corresponding types and derivations in ...

As a result of this definition, we will claim that TEs hold an ignorance-preserving trait that is evidenced in both TEs inferential structure and in the process of scenario creation they presuppose. Elaborating this thesis will allow us to explain the wonder that philosophers of science have consistently shown for TEs, as well as the high functionality of TEs in the creative aspects of scientific and philosophical praxis.

Starting from well-established practices and standards of psychometric analysis, our work has produced a complex cross-scalar survey of scientific competency between students attending an art and multimedia high school. Data are classified through six scales about self-esteem, scientific attitudes, paranormal beliefs, scientific competency, social desirability and personality traits. The results are considered in relation to three hypotheses: the correlation between positive scientific attitude and lower paranormal beliefs plus higher scientific competencies; the scientific attitude is enhanced by cultural and scientific activities and negatively related to superstition; people who show specific personality traits have higher positive attitude and interest toward science, while other traits are more related to superstitious beliefs. The outcome of our poll confirms our hypotheses and shows additional traits correlations.

In Abrusci (On residuation, 2014) it is shown that the basic properties known as Residuation laws can be characterized in the framework of Cyclic Multiplicative Linear Logic, a purely non-commutative fragment of Linear Logic. We present a summary of this result and, pursuing this line of investigation , we analyze a well-known set of categorial grammar laws: Monotonicity, Application, Expansion, Type-raising, Composition, Geach laws and Switching laws.
