The goal of this study was to approach this population in order to understand their access/use of health services to the treatment of drug addiction. This is a qualitative research consisting of 26 individual interviews and one focal group with five crack users living in the streets of a city of Baixada Santista/SP. The analysis of this study revealed that the treatment offered by therapeutic communities is the best known, but it is not effective for this population. Regarding the treatment offered by the public health system, there were criticism, little information and limited access, and a lack of knowledge about harm reduction strategies. The crack users reported feelings of stigma, discrimination and prejudice, feelings which were experienced also in their relation with health professionals, being these important factors that hinder the access of this population to the care and health system.

It explores an element of partner violence that has long been taboo among feminist activists and researchers: the role of alcohol in contributing to the frequency and severity of violence in intimate relationships. I began researching the issue of violence against women in the early 1980s. At that time, the problem of partner violence—especially on an international scale—was still deeply hidden. Victims suffered in silence and few global institutions acknowledged, let alone tackled, the issue. Women’s groups were beginning to organize in countries outside of the United States and Europe. But they still saw the problem of partner violence as an aberration—a problem unique to their culture. It was not until the late 1990s that advocates began to join forces across national boundaries and frame intimate partner violence as a global issue, first as an abuse of women’s human rights at the United Nations World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 19...

A population-based survey was conducted in a sample of Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil, using the GENACIS questionnaire, Gender, Alcohol and Culture: An International Study. Adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated using Poisson Regression with robust variance, and the dependent variable was the occurrence of falls. Interviews were carried out with 432 subjects whose average age was 69.5 years. Regarding alcohol use 50.9% were lifetime abstainers, 25.5% had not drunk in the previous year and 23.6% were current drinkers. Among the latter, 14 (13.7%) were heavy drinkers. In the previous year 24.5% people had falls, which were associated with being a heavy drinker and being older. Although a relationship between being a heavy drinker and falls found in this survey does not allow for inferences on causality, this association supports the hypothesis that a...
