The case study presented in this paper is Florence, whose Roman origins and development, from the Middle Ages to today, are closely linked to the Arno River, which runs from east to west. After briefly reviewing some salient moments in the history of the relationship between the city and the river, the paper illustrates some research and projects carried out within the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence, focused on the role that Arno can still play in the future of the Florentine metropolitan area, as a catalyst for interventions aimed at improving urban sustainability, livability and resilience to climate change.

This phenomenon can be related to the upgrades of technology and especially to the interventio ns of urban improvement usally carried out together with the construction of new tracks. On the contrary, in Florence, where a new tram network has been building since 2004, a traditional sectorial approach has still prevailed, unable to offer solutions to conflicting uses of the street space. Consequently citizens' hostility against the tramway has increased. The University of Florence has attempted to reopen the discussion about the positive link between new infrastructures and urban renovation, promoting a seminar, that has been joined by town planners, transport experts, politicians and public officials. As a contribute, there was presented a proposal-both methodological and effective-in order to align the Florentine project to the quality standards achieved in other european cities.

Since then, a community of public and private subjects gathered by INU has been established and growing, sharing experiences, problems and solutions. Through the organization of dozens of meetings, seminars, workshops, conference sessions and webinars, more than 200 experiences developed in Italy have been collected, including studies and research, public policies, projects and actions, both material and immaterial, concerning the overcoming of different kind of barriers: physical, sensory, perceptive, intellectual, cultural, social, economic, health and gender. On these bases, in 2019, the INU Accessible-to-all Cities Community launched an open web archive, an initiative that intends to contribute to increasing awareness and knowledge, as well as to facilitate the implementation and development of actions and policies, by leveraging the good practices widespread, but often little known, in Italy.
