Among these different elements, a widespread sense of exoticism originates from the presence of thirty-six Chinese painted papers, which date back to the second half of the Seventeenth century. Most likely, they were produced in the port city of Canton, and were destined exclusively to the Western market. These paintings were bought, together with hundreds of other samples, by Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, who followed the exoticism trend which had exploded in Europe during the same century, and were displayed at the Villa di Castello. Because of the lack of information regarding these paintings, this paper has tried to retrace the historical events and vicissitudes of the collection from the Villa “La Petraia”, as well as to study its historical and artistic features. This research starts from the analysis of the inventory from the Villa, redacted in 1911, in which the Chinese paintings were registered for the first time. Setting the transfer of the paintings from the Villa di Castello to the Villa “La Petraia” around 1861 and 1911, the research goes on by analyzing how the painting had been set up since 1911 until today, and the subsequent loss of some of them. Secondly, the study focuses on the phenomenon of exoticism during the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, which was strictly connected to the original gathering of Chinese painted papers in the Villa di Castello. Its acquisition and preparation, by the hand of Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, also, have been examined. Finally, the execution techniques and the different types of decoration have been described in relation to the Chinese painted papers of Villa La Petraia, using stylistic comparisons with similar samples from the second half of the Seventeenth century.
