The work followed several steps: identification of significant potsherds for the 3D reconstruction, the 3D acquisition of the fragments with laser scanner, the analysis of the 3D model (diameter, vertical projection, orientation and thickness), 3D reconstruction and modelling of the vessel, photographic acquisition and orthostereoscopic rendering for 3D visualization.

The test has been carried out on some archaeological artefacts, differing in size, material, shape, texture and surface characteristics, focusing on the possible applications of the outcomes and on diverse parameters offered from the device. A low cost 3D laser scanner (NextEngine) was chosen for the test, because of its cost affordability, especially for museums and Cultural Heritage (CH) institutions. The result of the qualitative analyses performed by professionals on the scanned objects (archaeologist, ceramist, paleoanthropologist), along with issues that emerged during data acquisition and data post-processing, allowed us making recommendations useful for Cultural Heritage professionals interested in applying digital technologies in their daily work.

This paper presents an ongoing research that aims to apply Natural Language Processing (NLP) based on Lexicon Grammar (LG) approach to increase information retrieval in the Archaeological domain. In particularly, the main scope of this work is to apply language formalization techniques to describe decision-making and problem-solving processes in the field of Archaeology, in order to formalize an ontology for this domain.

In the cases where there were more than one partner organisation in a country (e.g. the Netherlands and Greece) or neighbouring countries shared a common language and culture (e.g. Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic), partners were encouraged to organise joint events. Reminders were sent out during Year 2 so that partners had time to prepare. This was especially important for organisations who wanted to organise their workshop in association with a third party conference similar event and therefore required a lead time for submission of a workshop proposal. Some of the partners are well placed as National Heritage Institutions with a dissemination remit to organise their own workshops, others institutions had less experienc. Regardless of this, seventeen workshops were held successfully in a variety of formats and each partner has submitted a re...

This compact guide offers twenty guidelines to align the efforts of data producers, data archivists and data users in humanities and social sciences to make research data as reusable as possible based upon the FAIR Principles. Each guideline has recommendations for both researchers and archives as it is recognised that different priorities may apply to each case. The guidelines result from the work of over fifty PARTHENOS, ARIADNEplus and SEADDA project members. They were responsible for investigating commonalities in the implementation of policies and strategies for research data management and used results from desk research, questionnaires and interviews with selected experts to gather around one hundred current data management policies (including guides for preferred formats, data review policies and best practices, both formal as well as tacit). The CIDOC CRM extension “CRMBA”, purposely developed for investigating historic and archaeological buildings, facilitates the discovery of and reasoning on archaeological resources through the definition of new concepts that describe the complexity of historic buildings. Through CRMBA the relations between building components, functional spaces, topological relations and construction phases through time and space will be made explicit. The approach used in the development of the CRMBA makes the model valid for the documentation of different kinds of buildings, across periods, styles and conservation state.

Cultural heritage professionals deal with heterogeneous and numerous datasets that are different in format, description, shape, context and so forth. This implies an everyday choice regarding the methodologies to adopt in order to record, describe, document, interpret the available information. In this perspective, communication is intended to be not a final step or an outcome but it is a vital process that goes through the description of all the passages. The ability to communicate information ensures the long term preservation, enabling the scientific community, third party data providers and users to reuse the data for different scopes, possible re-interpretations and processing. Based on these assumptions, STARC developed a metadata schema that enables to communica...
