The study examines whether tax policies in Nigeria have similarimplications on the manufacturing ... more The study examines whether tax policies in Nigeria have similarimplications on the manufacturing sector’s output during the1994Q1-2020Q4 period using the ARDL bounds testing approach.The bounds testing result suggests the presence of cointegrationbetween tax policies and the manufacturing sector output. Further,the estimation results demonstrate that company income tax (CIT)and import tax are positively related to manufacturing sectoroutput. In contrast, value-added tax (VAT) has a negative effecton the manufacturing sector output, both in the short- and longterm.In addition, the results of the Granger causality test indicatea unidirectional causal relationship running from tax policies tothe manufacturing sector output and not vice versa. Thus, policiesand measures are recommended to prioritize the CIT and importtax, review the assortment in the VAT, and ensure accountabilityand transparency in the tax system.JEL Classification: C32, L60, H22

This study assesses the effect of COVID-19 proxied by the number of confirmed cases of the infect... more This study assesses the effect of COVID-19 proxied by the number of confirmed cases of the infection and deaths on Nigeria’s stock market over the 23rd March to 11th September 2020 period using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL), canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) techniques. The bounds test to cointegration result reveals that a long-run relationship exists between COVID-19 and Nigeria’s stock market (along with oil prices and exchange rate). The results of the various estimations demonstrate that COVID-19 (proxied by the number of confirmed cases of infection) has a negative and significant impact on stock market performance, while the number deaths has a positive and significant impact on the market in the long-run. This study examines the effect of governance on women's participation using annual time-serie... more This study examines the effect of governance on women's participation using annual time-series data for 29 years spanning from 1990 - 2019. The ARDL Bounds test discloses the existence of a long-run co-integration relationship between accountability, control of corruption, and effectiveness of government and women participation in the labor force. The empirical results obtained revealed that both in the short-run and long-run accountability and the percentage of female employment have a positive and statistically significant effect on women's participation in Nigeria. Although, both in the short-run and long-run the effectiveness of government shows negative and statistically insignificant, the control of corruption exerted a negative and statistically significant impact both in the short-run and long-run. The paper investigates the determinants of exchange rate in Nigeria using times series data rangi... more The paper investigates the determinants of exchange rate in Nigeria using times series data ranging from 1980 to 2016 and employing the Vector Error Correction Mechanism (VECM) to separate the long-run determinants of exchange rate from its short-run determinants. The result from the dynamic model reveals that changes in domestic price level, interest rate differentials, trade openness, government purchases of tradable and non-tradable goods and capital inflow are the major long-run determinants of exchange rate in Nigeria while changes in the domestic price level, interest rate differentials and capital inflow are the major short-run determinants of exchange rate in Nigeria. The study recommended the actions of the monetary authorities towards the maintenance of relative low and stable price level, interest rate capable of attracting foreign investors and the design and implementation of trade policies which tend to increase the inflow of capital from abroad. This study adopts OLS technique to examine the effects of corruption on household final consumption expenditure in Nigeria from 1980 to 2015. The result revealed that corruption has positive relationship with household final consumption expenditure in Nigeria and therefore statistically significant. The author recommends that Anti-corruption agencies and their personnel should be empowered to discipline the culprits irrespective of their status. Finally, whistle blowing policy should be reinforced and sustained by both the incumbent and subsequent governments to minimize the menace of corruption in Nigeria. This study employs the cross sectional survey research design and the descriptive and ordinary le... more This study employs the cross sectional survey research design and the descriptive and ordinary least square regressions to examine the impact of Electronic-Payment Systems on the financial performance of Microfinance Banks and Institutions in Niger state, Nigeria. The results of the analysis indicate the presence of e-payment systems in the bank, which enjoys impressive acceptability, due to its ease of use and convenience. In addition, ATM facility, Internet payment options, e-payment cards, and mobile banking platforms shows a significant positive impact on the financial performance of COE-Minna microfinance bank. In essence, the improvement and review of e-payment platforms’ security, so as to attract more users, coupled with the reduction of charges associated with the use of the platforms as well as sensitization of potential users were recommended.

It is on this note, the quantitative research method was adopted to investigates the asymmetric relationship between aggregate institutional quality and foreign direct investment in Nigeria using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributive Lag (NARDL) model on quarterly time-series data from 1999 Q1 – 2019 Q4. The bounds test obtains revealed that long-run co-integrating relationship exist among the variables. This policy is to achieve fairness, peace and equitable distribution of resource. Its adverse effect on the economy is thus something to worry about. Therefore, the study examines the effect of democratic zoning system on the economy of Nigeria, with special reference to Niger state. Employing descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The results revealed that the elements of democratic zoning vis-àvis; peace, equity, unity and justice has a positive and significant effect on the growth of the Nigeria economy. The authors thus recommends the government at both levels should focus on providing simultaneous development projects to pave way for peace and unity, zoning system should be incorporated into the Nigeria constitution, unbiased and equitable distribution of resources across the economy.

Both in the short run, and long-run the results obtained indicated a positive relationship between financial inclusion and women participation in gainful employment. Thus, the paper recommends that the government should ensure that the barriers to financial inclusion is reduced or removed. This will increase women participation in economic activities, since measures regarding financial inclusion is adjudged as convenient, safety and prompt. Measures that will enhance private deposit and expansion of more commercials banks branch in rural areas to enhance women’s access to financial services which discourage the use of informal financial services should be encouraged.

The study focuses on the analysis of the causality between poverty and crises in northern Nigeria... more The study focuses on the analysis of the causality between poverty and crises in northern Nigeria using the Granger causality test and the ARDL bound testing techniques. The study revealed the presence of causality running from poverty to crises and not the other way round as well as co-integration among the pairs. The long-run estimate thus showing poverty exhibiting a positive effect on crises which deviates from the negative relationship obtained in the short-run. The study thus recommends employing poverty reducing mechanism in the region coupled with the overhauling of the agricultural sector as most of the labor force in the region are unskilled which can be easily absorbed in the sector.

The study analyses the role of the petroleum pump price on the consumer price index in Nigeria, u... more The study analyses the role of the petroleum pump price on the consumer price index in Nigeria, using the Nonlinear Autoregressive distributive lag method was used to estimate the time-series data, spanning from 1980 to 2020. The study reveals a long-run equilibrium was found between the consumer price index and petroleum pump price measures. The empirical results obtained revealed an asymmetric relationship between the petroleum pump price and the consumer price index in Nigeria. The study recommended that the policymakers should transparently commit resources into rehabilitation and maintenance of domestic refineries to enhance their functionality and as well reduce importation cost to curtail frequent petroleum pump price adjustment that spiral domestic inflation.

If not appropriately channelized, it can be a liability for a nation. A skilled and hardworking population can emerge as a foundation for a country's development. This study examines the validity of Malthusian Theory in Nigeria using time series data from 1960 to 2016, employs the ARDL bound test techniques. The result shows that in the long-run, population growth and food production move proportionately, while population growth poses a depleting effect on food production in the short-run, thus validating the incidence of Malthusian impact in Nigerian economy in the short-run. The researcher recommended the government should strategize plans, which will further intensify family planning and birth control measure, compulsory western education and revitalization of the agricultural sector.

This policy is to achieve fairness, peace and equitable distribution of resource. Its adverse effect on the economy is thus something to worry about. Therefore, the study examines the effect of democratic zoning system on the economy of Nigeria, with special reference to Niger state. Employing descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The results revealed that the elements of democratic zoning vis-àvis; peace, equity, unity and justice has a positive and significant effect on the growth of the Nigeria economy. The authors thus recommends the government at both levels should focus on providing simultaneous development projects to pave way for peace and unity, zoning system should be incorporated into the Nigeria constitution, unbiased and equitable distribution of resources across the economy.

Both in the short run, and long-run the results obtained indicated a positive relationship between financial inclusion and women participation in gainful employment. Thus, the paper recommends that the government should ensure that the barriers to financial inclusion is reduced or removed. This will increase women participation in economic activities, since measures regarding financial inclusion is adjudged as convenient, safety and prompt. Measures that will enhance private deposit and expansion of more commercials banks branch in rural areas to enhance women’s access to financial services which discourage the use of informal financial services should be encouraged.

The study revealed the presence of causality running from poverty to crises and not the other way round as well as co-integration among the pairs. The long-run estimate thus showing poverty exhibiting a positive effect on crises which deviates from the negative relationship obtained in the short-run. The study thus recommends employing poverty reducing mechanism in the region coupled with the overhauling of the agricultural sector as most of the labor force in the region are unskilled which can be easily absorbed in the sector.

The study reveals a long-run equilibrium was found between the consumer price index and petroleum pump price measures. The empirical results obtained revealed an asymmetric relationship between the petroleum pump price and the consumer price index in Nigeria. The study recommended that the policymakers should transparently commit resources into rehabilitation and maintenance of domestic refineries to enhance their functionality and as well reduce importation cost to curtail frequent petroleum pump price adjustment that spiral domestic inflation.

If not appropriately channelized, it can be a liability for a nation. A skilled and hardworking population can emerge as a foundation for a country's development. This study examines the validity of Malthusian Theory in Nigeria using time series data from 1960 to 2016, employs the ARDL bound test techniques. The result shows that in the long-run, population growth and food production move proportionately, while population growth poses a depleting effect on food production in the short-run, thus validating the incidence of Malthusian impact in Nigerian economy in the short-run. The researcher recommended the government should strategize plans, which will further intensify family planning and birth control measure, compulsory western education and revitalization of the agricultural sector.

This study assesses the effect of COVID-19 proxied by the number of confirmed cases of the infect... more This study assesses the effect of COVID-19 proxied by the number of confirmed cases of the infection and deaths on Nigeria’s stock market over the 23rd March to 11th September 2020 period using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL), canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) techniques. The bounds test to cointegration result reveals that a long-run relationship exists between COVID-19 and Nigeria’s stock market (along with oil prices and exchange rate). The results of the various estimations demonstrate that COVID-19 (proxied by the number of confirmed cases of infection) has a negative and significant impact on stock market performance, while the number deaths has a positive and significant impact on the market in the long-run.
