When it occurs, it is often due to an intrauterine polypoid mass attached to the uterine fundus, eventually pulling the uterus inside out over time as the mass increases in size. We present a case of nonpuerperal uterine inversion in a 32-year-old female who presented with heavy vaginal bleeding and vaginal protrusion of a fleshy mass. A clinical diagnosis of chronic uterine inversion due to a pedunculated submucous fibroid was made and was surgically managed with a vaginal myomectomy combined with an exploratory laparotomy and surgical reduction under general anesthesia. Good clinical acumen and surgical skills are invaluable for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of nonpuerperal uterine inversion.

Aim This study was aimed to investigate the effect of pretreatment peripheral blood NLR on the survival prognosis of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Methods We identified 93 patients with a complete clinical record from a cohort of 155 patients who received treatment for EOC between 2009 and 2018. Patients’ sociodemographic and clinicopathologic characteristics, and updated three-year follow-up status were extracted from medical records. Pretreatment peripheral blood NLR was calculated by dividing the neutrophil count by the lymphocyte count. We employed the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to identify the optimal cut-off value of the NLR in estimating progress...

There have been reports of endocrine dysfunction and gonadal failure among affected individuals, especially in males. The findings on ovarian reserve and failure in women with sickle anaemia has been inconsistent.Aim and objective: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the ovarian reserve of Nigerian women with and without sickle cell anaemia attending a University Teaching Hospital.Study Design: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Adult Sickle Cell Clinic and the Community Health Clinic of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.Methodology: A total of 166 participants who met the selection criteria, were recruited for the study. The study population consisted of two groups of women matched for age; 83 women with HbSS and 83 women with HbAA. The haemoglobin phenotypes of each participant were determined on alkaline electrophoresis (pH 8.4) before analysis. serum Anti-Mulle...

MATERIALS AND METHODS Using data from a retrospective cohort of 126 patients who received treatment for EOC between 2010 and 2018, we identified 83 patients with a complete clinical record for subsequent data analysis. Patients' demographics and updated 2-year follow-up status were abstracted from medical records. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were compared using the log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazard models were used for multivariate analysis to identify independent predictors of survivals following treatment in EOC patients. RESULTS The median PFS and OS were 12 and 24 months, respectively. After adjusting for covariates in the multivariate analysis, younger age ≤ 55 years (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.74; P = .01) and Int...

Black women of reproductive age group are more likely to develop uterine fibroids. Although available evidence suggests racial and genetic predisposition to the aetiology of uterine fibroid, oxidative stress has been implicated in the onset and progression of uterine fibroids. Epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis of gynaecological diseases including uterine fibroids.Aim and ObjectivesThis study aims to assess the serum levels of antioxidants (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) and oxidants (protein carbonyl (PC), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP)) in women with uterine fibroids and to identify any association between the size...

Research paper thumbnail of Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma: case report of a rare gynaecological malignancy and diagnostic challenge in a resource-constraint setting

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma (VLMS) is an extremely rare variant of primary vaginal cancers wit... more Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma (VLMS) is an extremely rare variant of primary vaginal cancers with very poor prognosis irrespective of the stage at presentation and the type of treatment received. It is easily recurrent and has a high propensity for haematogenous spread especially to the lungs. We present the case of a 34-year-old Para 1 + 1 (1 alive) woman with recurrent vaginal mass of 8 years duration after two surgical excisions without histological evaluation. She had examination under anaesthesia and a wide local excision of the vaginal mass. Histological examination of the mass revealed poorly differentiated VLMS with positive surgical margins and she was commenced on adjuvant chemo-radiation. Histological evaluation remains the hallmark for diagnosing rare malignancies like VLMS, which unfortunately is not a standard practice in some resource-constraint settings.

MATERIALS AND METHODS A randomized controlled trial was carried out among women in two tertiary health institutions in Lagos, Nigeria, between July 2020 and March 2021. Participants were randomly assigned to either a text message (mHealth) intervention or usual care arm. The main study outcome was the uptake of Pap smear testing within 6 months of enrollment in the study. We tested the associations between two groups of continuous variables using the unpooled independent-sample t-test (normal distribution) and that of two groups of categorical variables with the chi-square (χ2) test. Using a multinomial logistic regression model, we adjusted for relevant sociodemographic and clinical predictors of uptake of Pap smear screening. Statistical significance was defined as P < .05. RESULTS There was a significantly higher rat...
