Although the relationship between individual members and unions still depends on a great deal upon the voluntary acceptance of the authority of the unions by the individual members, the unions are themselves structured partly as a response to the requirements of the law and also as a result of the push by rank and file members for real improvements in the performance of the union‘s leadership (Iyayi, 2000). In the process, it further considers the stiff competition in the banking sector coupled with the current sharp decline in the global price of crude oil with its attendant implications for the performance of the Nigerian economic growth which has a spillover effect on indwelt elements like stress factor facing the banking employee. Based on this foundational philosophy, 300 structured questionnaires were administered of which 218 were found usable and on which an in-depth analysis was conducted via the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences’ (SPSS) data analysis; whilst Correlation and Regression analyses were applied to test the formulated hypotheses. This study examines workforce planning on organizational performance in two private manufacturing... more This study examines workforce planning on organizational performance in two private manufacturing companies at Apapa area of Lagos State. This study adopted a survey research design in which sample size determination table was used to choose 300 copies of the questionnaire administered, out of which 166 were recovered and used for data analysis, representing 55 per cent of the copies of the questionnaire recovered. The data collected were analysed through the descriptive and inferential method, and both Pearson’s moment correlation and regression analysis were used in testing the stated hypotheses. The findings show workforce planning has an influence on organizational performance. To achieve the objective of the study, survey research design was used for data collection. The study relied heavily on quantitative method by using a structured questionnaire which was administered on the employees of three selected telecommunication companies, MTN Nigeria, Airtel and Globacom at their Head offices respectively. The study adopted stratified sampling technique to administer Five hundred and thirty-three (533) questionnaires with three hundred and forty-two (342) (i.e. 64 percent) valid responses. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test of all the variables indicated 0.87. Data gathered were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. This research work focused on the labour market trends and the bottlenecks towards achieving dece... more This research work focused on the labour market trends and the bottlenecks towards achieving decent work agenda in the Nigerian environment. The issues on decent work agenda have become an important concern both to industrial and labour relations actors, considering the state of economic crisis Nigeria is currently experiencing, as a result of corruption and mismanagement of the national economy coupled with the effect of declining crude oil prices internationally. All these culminating in depressing global economic meltdown. The study is purely based on qualitative method as it extracted secondary data from Global Competitiveness Report of 2013-2014 for its analysis. The findings amongst others show that decent work agenda and poverty reduction in Nigeria has not really achieved its set objectives, but as a programme, it continues to serve as guides for government policy-makers and private sector to enhance living conditions of employees, to measure and design appropriate policy and programmes for the populace. The study recommended that there is a need for governments at all levels to improve its personnel capacity in order to have the tenacity to enforce labour market regulations. There is also need for government at all levels to make the operations of labour and factories inspectorates to be corrupt free and be more responsive to the workers physical working conditions and plights. Finally, there is a need for government to take the issues of providing enabling environment serious since they are meant to bring people out of poverty circle.

This study is about the managerial methods adopted by Nigerian managers in training their employe... more This study is about the managerial methods adopted by Nigerian managers in training their employees for capacity development, as well as the impact of such methods on the overall organisational performance in the Nigerian business environment. It gives an overview appraisal of the human capital development approach in Nigeria and the administrative strategies adopted by managers in instilling the relevant skills into their employees for optimal performance. The study however, examines this approach in comparison with other emerging economies across the globe. Furthermore, it evaluates Nigeria's organisational status with a view to determining its level of commitment towards training, research and capital development. The findings of the study show that Nigeria has not learnt from the past failure, and harnessing the latest technologies for productivity enhancements, at the same time taking the opportunity presented by the oil revenues to upgrade the population's access to basic healthcare, standard of education, training and development and improvements in other areas such as standard of living and infrastructure. Based on the evidences, the study recommended that there is need for government to invest and promote indigenous research, have a policy that will link research institutes, laboratories and universities library together. Finally, there is need to improved physical infrastructure and enhance human capital development.

In the process, it further considers the stiff competition in the banking sector coupled with the current sharp decline in the global price of crude oil with its attendant implications for the performance of the Nigerian economic growth which has a spillover effect on indwelt elements like stress factor facing the banking employee. Based on this foundational philosophy, 300 questionnaires were administered of which 218 were found usable and on which in-depth analysis was conducted via the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences' (SPSS) data analysis; whilst Correlation and Regression analyses were applied to test the formulated hypotheses. The findings of the research effort show that stress issue in the workplace is of a growing concern particularly in the banking sub-sector. This development portends a detriment to the health and psychic of bank employees-and thus poses a great threat to work place performance. Further findings from the study; reveal (amongst others) the potential debacle facing the bank employees. These include work overload, low level of job satisfaction (in spite of measurable remunerations) and lack of autonomy-including job insecurity. The study recommends (amongst others) that effective management of bank staffers require developing action plans by bank management that would entail monitoring, reassessing (via feedback mechanism) the dynamics of the internal workplace and the turbulent external environment. It concludes on the note that, where the optimum of an average bank employee is sought, the work environment should embrace his participation in decision making process at appropriate level of the affected organization. This is largely achievable through his engagement in state of the art training programmes amongst other incentives.
