This paper therefore presents modeling and simulation of a sensory device, which evaluates the volume VLQD of any type of liquid in any type of a closed container that has a cross-sectional area A (m2) and height h (m). The main attraction of the approach is that it does not get in touch with the liquid, its simplicity and lower cost. The aim is achieved by using a sensor, Light Dependent Resistor (LDR); which operates on a principle which states that the voltage ELUX in Volts across a LDR is a function of luminance it receives from a light source, Light Emitting Diode (LED). This principle and a power function developed using experimental data were used to model VLQD; which reveals that VLQD in litres is a function of EL...

These wastages are very detrimental to industrial development; therefore, there is need to make use of advancement in technology to reduce wastage in electricity usage. To that effect, this paper proposes a device that can control home appliances via Global System for Mobile Communication network so as to reduce electrical energy wastages and consequently, enhance industrial sectors growth. In addition, the proposed device will inform the user when utility board restores electricity on the user’s mobile line, display on the mobile line of the user the states of all the connected appliances and receive appropriate command from the user, to either switch ON or OFF specified appliance(s). The various results obtained when the proposed device was ...

These models are often developed and analyzed in simulated environments. The obvious need to experiment and confirm the actual performance of these algorithms and models on the field or in a more realistic environment is hampered in many cases by the high cost of advanced sensor node available in the market. This study therefore presents an inexpensive WSN test bed designed and constructed from an ESP8266EX Wi-Fi module. An experiment was conducted and results revealed that ESP8266EX based sensor nodes have a wider network coverage compared to the Arduino sensors based test bed. The proposed test bed was used to compare the performances in terms of power management of two WSN routing algorithms; normal Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and Cluster Head Assisted Routing (C...

The day-to-day increase in electric energy demand with increasing population and urbanization is ... more The day-to-day increase in electric energy demand with increasing population and urbanization is causing transmission facilities to transfer load at their upper limits; therefore, the probability of failures of these facilities increases. One of the ways of mitigating failures is by constructing more transmission lines; which would serve as alternatives to reduce the transmission line utilization levels (TLUL). However, there are constraints in adopting this method; therefore, the use of Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) has been suggested by many researchers; but very few of these studies proposed the IPFC that has capability of handling operating constraints (IPFCthC) in solving power transmission systems issues. Some of the studies that proposed the IPFCthC use trial and error approach in identifying the optimal location for its injection in multi-buses power grid. Also, some of the studies that proposed the IPFCthC do not employ it to investigate its capability in reducing ...

The Assisting Cluster Head (ACH) collates data within the cluster while the cluster head (CH) is left with the task of transmitting collated data towards the base station (BS). In this manner, the huge energy burden hitherto on the CH is reduced. An energy cost function is developed; which considers the residual energy of the nodes and the energy burden imposed on the cluster should any member is elected as a head. The node that best satisfies the two criteria is favored to be elected as the head. Simulations were carried out in MATLAB and in a test bed using ESP8266, conditioned with power supply unit, a voltage measuring circuit and a firmware, as the wireless sensor nodes. The results revealed an improvement in the energy consumption profile of the CHAR over non cluster head assisted routing. The CHA...

An alternative to constructing new lines is the incorporation of the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS); in which a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is a member of the ménage, which can be modelled as a combination of Static Var Compensator and Thyristor Control Series Compensator. This study determines the optimal location of the UPFC by randomly adding loads to the existing transmission network until the Fast Voltage Stability Index of one of the lines is at a critical point. This is the vital line in which UPFC components are added. The sizing of the components of the UPFC is determined using Artificial Bee Colony algorithm. The IEEE 30-bus network is exploited as the test bed. The results obtained reveal that the optimal positioning and sizing of the UPFC for the purpose of maximizing loadability of the grid when load angles a...

Therefore, forecasting possible unsafe condition(s) of the power grid using an efficient power study tool is essential; and, provision of necessary mitigation actions to ensure a reliable grid is important. This paper, therefore, presents evacuation study of a 400 MW power plant connecting to the 15 GW planned transmission network of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The NEPLAN power system analytical software was used in the modelling and simulation of the electric power grid. In the research, load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and contingency analyses were performed on the case study. From the short circuit study, it is observed that if TCN network expansion program is fully implemented, the short circuit level will go beyond the existing switchgear ratings in major substations of the network. However, with the in...

In... more This study presents the cost sustainability analysis of an enhanced distribution network (DN). In the study, the enhancement of the DN was achieved through network reconfiguration (NR) and the introduction of distributed generation units (DGs) at some locations. When the DN was only reconfigured, the power losses in the network reduced by 23.39 % at 1.0 p.u loading; whereas, the minimum voltage profile in the network improved by 1.79 %. When both reconfiguration and DG were engaged in losses minimization, power losses reduced by 61.94 % at full load, whereas the minimum voltages in the network improved by 7.66 %. When the DN was reconfigured and DGs were embedded at three different locations, the energy losses in the entire network reduced by 61.94 % and 58.37 % at 0.5 and 1.0 loadings respectively; whereas, the minimum voltages in the network improved by 1.21 % and 8.46 % at 0.5 p.u and 1.0 p.u loadings respectively. The information obtained from the load flow analysis was used for...
