In particular, the correct representation of the kinetic constants as a function of the isothermal crystallization temperature is discussed. In fact, Avrami analysis of isothermal crystallization data leads to the computation of kinetic constants characterized by physical dimensions depending on the calculated Avrami index. The representation on a single plot of these kinetic constants is not formally correct, and therefore a modification of the Avrami expression must be adopted.

A modi®cation of the nucleation/growing mechanism was observed in both isothermal and non-isothermal analysis. Samples isothermally crystallized at T c , 1108C showed a higher fraction of amorphous phase which does not relax at T g . Lower and decreasing values of this 'rigid-amorphous phase' fraction were detected at higher crystallization temperatures T c . 1108C: The effect of hydrolytic degradation on the amorphous and crystalline phases depends upon the initial morphology developed during the isothermal crystallization. The larger crystals developed at T c 1308C are more resistant to erosion compared to the less perfect and smaller crystals developed at higher levels of undercooling T c 908C: q

Water acts as a plasticizer, reducing the glass transition temperature of the polymer below the sorption temperature and determining a glass transition in the polymer. In this study the changes in the ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in semicrystalline Poly-vinyl-alcohol (PVA) hydrogel films during water sorption are measured by a pulse-echo system. The ultrasonic wave propagation is applied to monitor the position of the swollen/unswollen fronts and to the measurement of velocity and attenuation. The structural changes in PVA hydrogels, monitored by Wide Angle X-ray Diffractometry (WAXD), performed during the sorption process, are correlated with the ultrasonic data.

When, during ultrasonic wave propagation, chemical or physical changes occurs, the evolution of an elastic modulus can be monitored. Therefore, this technique can be considered a powerful tool for non-destructive cure monitoring with a potential for “in situ” applications. In this work, the isothermal cure of a model epoxy resin cured with an amine is studied using propagation of longitudinal ultrasonic wave. The epoxy to amine ratio is optimized in order to reach full conversion of the amine groups during curing. The relative changes in the ultrasonic velocity and attenuation, measured by the transmission technique, have been applied to the calculation of the longitudinal modulus. The ultrasonic modulus has been compared with the degree of reaction measured using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore a correlation between the ultrasonic modulus and the crosslinking density is presented combining DSC data with the stoichiometry of reactants according with the statistical theory of Miller and Macosko. The plot of the ultrasonic modulus as a function of the crosslinking density suggested that the theory of rubber elasticity can not be applied to the ultrasonic bulk longitudinal modulus as a consequence of the small deformation involved in the propagation of the ultrasonic waves.

Acrylic bone cements are based on a mixture of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a fine powder of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The polymerization of the bone cement occurs in contact with the bone and the prosthesis which act as the boundaries of a bulk polymerization reactor. The kinetic behaviour of the bone cement plays a fundamental role for the final performance of the implant.
