In all languages (Afro-Asiatic, Niger-Congo, Romance, Indo-European, Indo-Aryan, Semitic languages) there are ethics and aesthetics. The latter deals with the values transmitted through conventional signs and symbols or verbal communication (semiotics & pragmatics). The former deals with beauty, arts, mora and traditional way of passing information from the language (used as vehicle of communication). The study employed a quasi-experiment: One-Shot Case Study Design (Treatment and Post-Test only). The study covered all Upper-Basic School Students in Ilorin South Local Government Kwara State from which Saint Anthony Secondary School was purposively selected. Intact class (Basic 9) was purposively selected as the sample; and the class comprised of 32 students which were the respondents. Treatment was carried out by the researcher in 3 instructional modules focusing on Change in Greenhouse Gases Concentration. Thereafter, a post-test was administered with a teacher-made test ‘Greenhouse Gases Concentration Achievement Test’ in Basic Science: the instrument contained 20 test items for which all the 32 students were the testees. The instrument was validated for its content and face validity by the supervisor. The data generated for this study from the test administered was analysed using frequency count, percentage; Standard deviation and mean were used to answer the research question 1 while research questions 2, 3 and 4 were answered using item analysis to obtain difficulty index, discrimination index of the items and options functionality for this study. The test items were analysed using SPSS version 22.The findings revealed that the academic performance of the Upper-Basic Students was fair at mean score of 11.78 and standard deviation of 2.329. However, from the results of the test; the item difficulty showed that 12 items were moderate; discrimination indices showed that 7 items were very good, 6 to be reviewed as they fairly discriminate and 7 items to be discarded for negative discrimination. Functionality of 62 options (keys and distracters) was found reliable; while 18 options were not functioning well (none of them was a key). Hence, the researcher recommended that teachers, item writers and subject officers should be exposed to principles and techniques of test construction. Teachers should employ multiple choice questions for assessing Environmental Science Concepts, curriculum developers should modify the Concept of Greenhouse Gases Concentration in the Basic 9 Curriculum to address the current issue of climate change and its evaluation, the examination bodies should modify the multiple choice items to assess the students’ academic performance and Government should encourage the use of multiple choice items in school-based assessment and formative assessment.
