A total of 200 adults with no history of mixed racial-parentage consisting of 100 males and 100 females were assessed for the following nasal parameters (columella height, columella width, nasal width, dome height) and lip parameters (vertical height of the lip, Cupid's bow width and total width of the mouth). Columella height, columella width, nasal width and dome height in male subjects were 1.24 ± 0.23,0.57 ± 0.18, 4.04 ± 0.55 and 2.89 ± 0.39 cm respectively while it was 1.18 ± 0.28, 0.57 ± 0.13, 3.80 ± 0.39 and 2.73 ± 0.44 cm respectively in the female subjects. Values obtained for the vertical height of the lip, Cupid's bow width and total width of the mouth in male subjects were 2.04 ± 0.46, 1.49 ± 0.22 and 5.37 ± 0.52 cm while it was 2.09 ± 0.31, 1.45 ± 0.29 and 5.14 ± 0.39 cm in the female subjects respectively. Male subject presented with a higher and significant (P< 0.05) values in nasal width, dome height and total width of the mouth than female subjects. This study has established the anthropometric norms in the lip nose complex of igbo's resident in Maiduguri with males demonstrating higher values than the female subjects.

A total of twenty five (25) adult male albino rats weighing 100-150g were divided into five groups (I, II, III, IV and V) of five rats each. Rats in group I served as control and were administered normal saline in a volume equivalent to the highest dosed group, rats in group II were administered 100mgkg -1 of ibuprofen, rats in group III were administered 100mgkg -1 of ibuprofen and 10 gkg -1 of Aloe Vera extract , rats in group IV were administered 100mgkg -1 of ibuprofen and 10 gkg -1 of honey while rats in group V were administered with 100mgkg -1 of ibuprofen , 10 gkg -1 of Aloe Vera extract and 10 gkg -1 of honey orally. The result showed a slight increase in liver weight, a significant increase (P<0.05) in the levels of Aspartate minotransferases (ASAT) , Alanine aminotransferases (ALAT) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the ibuprofen treated rats when compared to the control rats. Administration of Aloe vera extract and honey did not reverse the damage caused. Histological findings indicate severe dilation of blood vessel, necrosis of vascular connective tissues, wide spread vacuolar degeneration, edema and bile duct hyperplasia. The result indicates that Aloe vera extract and honey has little or no effect in preventing ibuprofen induced toxicity.

A total of thirty (30) adult albino rats of the Wister strain were used, they were randomly divided into six groups of five rats each. Group I served as control (no exposure to mosquito coil smoke). While rats in groups II-V were exposed to mosquito coil smoke for 12 h, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days respectively. At the end of each experimental period, blood was obtained 3 from each rat for the determination of serum levels of Na+, k+, Cl-, HCO , Urea and Creatinine.

Group I and II served as the normal and treatment controls that were administered with normal saline and 100mg/kg body weight of erythromycin stearate daily for 14 days respectively. Rats in group III were administered 450mg/kg body weight of Psidium guajava only for 7 days while rats in groups IV, V and VI were administered Psidium guajava extract for 7 days and 100mg/kg body weight of erythromycin for 14 days. Histopathological investigation of the liver tissues revealed striking oedema and mild periportal mononuclear cell infiltration of hepatic cords in the liver of rats administered 100 mg/kg of erythromycin stearate and 300/450 mg/kg of Psidium guajava extract. Pretreatment with 150 mg/kg of Psidium guajava extract showed a slight degree of protection against the induced hepatic injury caused by 100 mg/kg of erythromycin stearate. Biochemical analysis of the serum obtained revealed a significant increase in serum levels of hepatic enzymes measured in the groups administered with 100 mg/kg of erythromycin stearate and 300/450 mg/kg of Psidium guajava extract compared to the control groups and those pretreated with 150 mg/kg of Psidium guajava extract. This study has shown that the aqueous extract of psidium guajava leaf possesses hepatoprotective property at lower dose and a hepatotoxic property at higher dose but further studies with prolonged duration is recommended.
