In this paper, the DarkBASIC Professional (DBPro) gaming software was applied as a VR platform to train humans’ adaptability towards new environments. The design of the structure of the VR platform using DBPro is described together with the main elements including 3D modeling, mapping, lighting and sound effects, and player’s control. A comparison between the real world and the VR platform was evaluated. Ten selected subjects conveyed positive feedback on the realism of the VR platform through the survey. The results show that the time taken to complete a task was reduced up to 60% after the subje...

Research paper thumbnail of Investigation on Water Consumption Pattern in Traditional Malaysian Kampung: An Insight Study on Water and Environmental Issues

This research aims to investigate on water consumption pattern of traditional Malaysian kampung. ... more This research aims to investigate on water consumption pattern of traditional Malaysian kampung. Random sampling survey method was adapted to capture information on water consumption from the relevant stakeholders. The water consumption pattern is divided into five major categories such as cooking, drinking, washing, gardening and others. Study indicates that water consumption for a family of four persons is about 140 l/day, which is below average in Malaysian standard. Water consumption for cooking, drinking, washing, gardening and others found to be 7, 15, 8, 2.5, and 3 litres respectively. The findings benefit government agencies in developing strategy to supply clean water to the kampung people. The study suggests further in-depth study on the essentially important topics in order to generate robust information for developing a general model to be used for government policies

The broad objective of this study was to measure the overall energy extraction efficiency of the said turbine system. Thisexperiment was conducted in a closed-loop water channel, and the velocity range was from 0.5 m/sto 1.1 m/s. The estimated overall energy efficiency of this turbine ranged from 12.8 percent to 25 percent. However, the most energy-inefficient component hereappeared to be the turbine’s blades, whose valuewas 84 percent. Indeed, energy inefficiency oftheblades contributed to a reduction inthe overall energy efficiency. This study concludes that in-stream multistage micro-hydro turbinesarea useful mechanical device for generating low-cost green energy from water. However, theenergy extraction efficiency of micro-hydro turbinesdepend on the interaction between the turbine blades and water flux; these two variables can bemanipula...

A major objective is to reduce levels of social exclusion which arise from inadequacy in infrastructure that strongly affects certain members of society such as the elderly, disabled and poor. This research focuses on the particular aspect of crowded public spaces where it is envisaged that improvements in crowd flow could be achieved by a proper consideration of all the users of the space but particularly the elderly and disabled. The ultimate objective would be design tools that provide architects with the means to achieve inclusivity in design for the elderly and disabled with relative ease and speed. Therefore, this research has developed a methodology and a computing tool to implement aspects of human walking behaviour in public spaces. Human behaviours have been st...

Research paper thumbnail of Modeling the Energy Extraction from In-stream Water by Multi Stage Blade System of Cross Flow Micro Hydro Turbine

Procedia Engineering, 2015

Development a MHT with multi stage blade (runner) for water velocity ranges from 0.5 m/s to 1.0 m/s is the novelty of this research. Findings of literature review on MHT and simulation results of ANSYS CFD software are the basis of designing this research project. The vital parameters involved in designing the turbine were blade area, blade stage, blades position against water flow direction, spacing between blades, blade materials; and other technical factors associated with turbine operations. The study revealed that the turbine had started to extract energy at water velocity 0.3 m/s at 35 RPM turbine speed. At water inlet velocity 1.1 m/s, the velocity drop across blade was 25.6% and the energy extraction efficiency was 48.3%. The findings demonstrated that the energy extraction capacity of turbine blade had been greatly influenced by the blade stages and water velocity. The study concludes that the developed turbine is useful in low velocity In-stream water body for energy extraction and would be able to contribute to achieve energy and environmental sustainability.

This paper proposes a generic conceptual model for crude palm production process considering these factors. The conceptual model could be modified to consider other factors not included in this paper. The future research would be to construct a simulation model based on the conceptual model proposed in this paper and analyse the effect of these factors on the performance of crude palm oil production system.
