It was mainly an important social activity: medieval illustrations show us that both men and women could participate, but the latter hardly joined the actual hunt and stayed in the back. Anyway, some exceptions are recorded in some hunt books and we can find images of female hunters depicted while aiming with a bow or chasing a prey horseback. Illustration of a female hunter from Le Roy Modus, XV century (Image taken from themedievalhunt.com) The popularity of hunting during medieval time was also due to the possibility for men to show their prowess and skills with weapons. This activity was indeed meant to keep noble lords trained for battles: they run wildly horseback into the forests to track down the prey and used bows, spears, daggers and knives to finish off the agonizing animal. Only the most courageous men dared to face wild beasts like boars, stags, bears and a fearless hunt represented an excellent chance for youngsters to show their bravery.
