The attention focuses on this subject with multidisciplinary sources linking newborns’ mortality with population control behaviour, investigating, and clustering common elements. The aim is to revisit these topics considering them as archetypal dimensions that possess elements deeply rooted and emotionally linked in human nature to make them universally shared in time and space. This creates a network of semantic and iconic connections so strong as to persist over the centuries.

Accordingly, before 1950 China had demographic characteristics of a pre-modern society with high mortality and high fertility rates. This situation produced certain stability in population size or, at least, lead to a slow increase. With the return of peace, after the foundation of The People’s Republic of China in 1949, China entered its demographic transition: first mortality began to fall rapidly and second, fertility remained for many years at about an average of six children per woman. As a result of this China experienced rapid population growth due to the high number of children born, to a sharp decline of infant mortality rate and to the increase of life expectancy at birth.

An example is that of the two projects “City Life-Portello” and “Porta Nuova”, in which the regeneration of derelict areas, within the urban structure, took place with highly intrusive methods and by creating contrapositions between new architectural elements and some historic buildings. In these areas the abandoned space was completely recycled, reinvented and adapted to new uses allowing for creative experiments and launching completely new design experiences for the city of Milan. This happened through the use of “landmarks” of great connotative and semantic force that led these places to bec...

It is no coincidence that Agenda 2030 set sustainable settlements as one of its seventeen strategic sustainability objectives. With the aim of providing useful food for thought for the debate on the principles and values to be applied in the planning and construction of sustainable settlements, the contribution will then focus on the theme of abandoned sites and the processes of return and re-signification that are manifesting in recent times, with particular reference to the urban context.

Nowadays, they have reached a strange, comfortable illusion according to which the demographic future of our planet does not seem to be a problem at all. Nevertheless, median population growth projections by 2100 indicate that an arrest of the increase by the end of the century is rather unlikely. The future prospect is made even more critical by the fact that the increase will occur in what can be called demographic ''Growing spots,'' strongly opposed to just as many ''Aging spots.'' In these terms, therefore, the future demographic dynamics will certainly pose a challenge to the ''population growth-sustainability'' combination, for which it will be necessary to develop a new paradigm capable of operating in a ''strong transcalar perspective,'' within a global space that will increasingly acquire characteristics of fluidity and changeability.
