First, it is shown that both men’s and women’s absolute rates of mobility have remained substantially stable during the period under analysis. Some changes did occur in relative mobility changes: on the one hand, the strength of the barriers separating the urban manual and non-manual classes has increased somewhat; on the other hand, the degree of viscosity of agricultural classes has considerably decreased. Overall, these two changes have brought about a slight increase in the degree of fluidity of the Italian society.

The results of the random-effects regression analyses fitted on a sample of respondents aged 16 years and older (N = 897) proved that there was a substantial and statistically significant short-term deterioration in mental health (from 78,5 to 67,9; β = -10.5, p < .001; Cohen’s d -.445), as measured by a composite index derived from the mental component of the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12). The findings also showed heterogeneity in the COVID-related effects. On the one hand, evidence has emerged that the pandemic acted as a great leveller of pre-existing differences in mental health across people of different ages: the decrease was most pronounced among those aged 16–34 (from 84,2 to 66,5; β = -17.7, p < .001; Cohen’s d -.744); however, the magnitude of change reduc...

To this aim, we carried out a full factorial experiment where sixty-four participants were asked first to picture themselves needing legal assistance, and then to rate their willingness to hire each of eight lawyers based on the information reported on the professionals' online personal profiles. Our analyses show that the level of professional trustworthiness attributed to lawyers by the experimental subjects mainly depends on three characteristics of the lawyers: the possession of specialized educational qualifications, the reputation held among colleagues, and the pursuit of philanthropic activities in leisure time. We conclude by highlighting some limitations of the study and suggesting possible venues for further research.

First, I propose a theoretical model that accounts for mobility propensities in terms of underlying generative mechanisms. This model is then operationalized, translated into a hybrid log-linear model for frequencies, and fitted to the pertinent mobility tables to verify whether (a) the observed data offer evidence in favour of the existence of the hypothesized mechanisms; and (b) cross-sex and/or cross-national dissimilarities in the action of such mechanisms do exist. The analysis shows that (a) all the hypothesized mechanisms contribute to generating the observed mobility regimes; (b) general resources and the objective desirability of classes account for most of the variation in mobility propensities observed in the two countries under study; (c) in both countries, men and women are characterized by the same mobility regime, except that women are less likely to inherit their father's business; (d) compared with the United States, Italy is characterized by a substantially higher degree of class inequality in terms of mobility chances.
